Whatever you do, you ABSOLUTELY need to get to a sarcoma center. If this is osteosarcoma, it is aggressive and deadly. Find a sarcoma center at www.sarcomahelp.com. You need a specialist, immediately.

In the Detroit area there is Karmanos Cancer Center. They treat OS. Also, I did treatments at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. Mine was head/neck Stage 2 and unknown to me I was at a very dangerous stage. But they did a 14 hour surgery in Nov. 2005, followed by radiation early 2006 and about six months of chemo later in 2006. So far results have been good.

My oncologist explained it to me this way - that OS is rare and most oncologists will consult with the Big Three (MD Anderson, Sloan-Kettering, Mayo clinic) for OS treatment protocols that can be implemented at most hospitals capable of radiation/chemo. Gamma knife has since come available, but is not available everywhere.

Dr Scharschmidt and mayorson at OSU are amazing.

Most OS pediatric specialists in the US follow the protocols of the Children's Oncology Group.

Since you live in KY why go to Texas. I commented early about my son. If you want call and talk to them at East Tn Children's Hospital. Doctor Malik is great. So is Dr. Pais. (865) 690-8961. I wish my son's doctor was still there but he quit when my son passed away. If it is OS it will spread quickly if not treated.

Janet - UofM is a great option. My OS was head/neck. My oncologists suggested in 2006 that if my cancer proved to be very difficult to treat that they may refer me to UofM. Luckily that was not necessary. And supposedly if I cared to pursue the option, there is a doctor there who could reconstruct the part of my jaw removed during the surgery to remove the tumors.

May i ask why u want to go so far away for treatment? We in michigan have a couple SUPER pediatric orthopedic oncologists, and childrens hospitals. My daughter is treated at Devos in grand rapids by a superb surgeon, Dr. Mathew Steensma. And also great oncologists! And the hospital itself is wonderfully geared towards kids and even their well being!:)

Love Merrillwood peds. Dr. Butry was my dr as a child and is great with my kids now too. Everyone in the practice has been wonderful.

Merrillwood Pediatrics in Royal Oak. Dr. Butry is our ped and she always goes above and beyond. On one occasion she visited my son in the hospital on her day off just to make sure he was ok, and she's recommended specialists that are also wonderful. We've always been able to get in same day when he's been sick. The staff is also very friendly and helpful.

We love Dr. Sloan and Dr. Grobe at Eastman and Wozniak. They always take time with our family. We followed them from Mali and Mali.

We see Dr. Jennifer Burgess through Henry Ford in commerce. She is personable and really awesome. She is a family medicine doc so she does not see only children, which I also like.

I took my kids to Dr. Geetha Nair on Union Lake Rd. For 16 years. She is an excellent diagnostician as well as having a terrific bed side manor. She has been in Practice for nearly 30 years and is unflappable and extremely reassuring for a new mother. I could not give a higher recommendation for any physician!

Dr Syed is fantastic. My boys have gone there since birth. If you like the natural approach first... less intervention than most.

Edgewood Pediatrics is where Skyler & Hailee go, I have seen most of the doctors there & I don't have one complaint, Dr. Baver is the girls primary doctor. They will fit you in quickly if your child is sick & I have had a Doctor wait 45 minutes after closing on a Saturday so My daughter could be seen.

I'm spending the summer in Michigan with my parents and take Cal to see Dr. Susanna Lin at IHA Pediatrics in Chelsea. So far she's been great and the office staff has been wonderful as well.

We see Dr Jessica Fealy, she's not IHA. She's in the U of M women & children's practice at Briarwood. We love her! As new parents we had a lot of questions. & she is very patient & informative. We also love Dr Helms (same group) and have been really happy with the lactation support of the clinic.
