If your getting painful shin splints and you want to stay minimalist (or in context a zero drop shoe) I suggest altras - they're ugly but a good shoe for people who want the more natural feel. http://www.altrarunning.com/

I love Merrell's Bare Access 3 Running Shoe with Smart Feet inserts. I have plantar fasciitis and this is the best combination I have come up with for running so far. Merrell has much more minimalistic shoes, but these are a nice happy medium -- they have the really wide toe box of a minimalist shoe, a zero heel-to-toe drop, and are very lightweight. However, they still have enough of a sole that, especially with the inserts, I get the arch support I need and they are really comfortable. The best thing you can do is go to a running shoe store and try on as many brands as possible. It's kind of trial and error to find the right one for your body and to deal with your injuries, I've found.

IMHO.... no one should make a recommendation for a running shoe for someone they have not seen run. I don't know where you are located but if you have Road Runners stores near you, they have a service there called "shoe dog". It is a recording of you on a treadmill running barefoot. This gives them an opportunity to see what your natural gait is like and what type of shoe with what correction is needed to make your step, your pace, your stance your gait - the best it can be! Other stores will video you running on a treadmill, but I've not found other stores that do it barefoot! They can even show you what you look like running and explain the findings to you! They will bring you several options of shoes based on that and any other challenges/problems you may have. Here is a link for their store locator. http://www.roadrunnersports.com/retail
