I went with Coral Vet (& yes, I listed all who posted on the referral line!) and saw Dr. Corbin. Was very impressed with all in the office AND the fact that Dr. Corbin specifically wrote the script so that I could take it to Publix & get it filled for FREE! (Instead of filling it at "their" pharmacy & charging $120, as has happened to me at a different vet in the past!!) He's got a definite eye infection (we're guessing it's a little something he brought home from his most recent trip to Barkingham dog park). He also has a mild skin infection, so the antibiotics with do good for both. He was a trooper at the vet & they oooed & awed all over him. He LOVED the attention!! Thanks, friends!!

Hi Debra, I'm not from that area but I can help with some general information. I agree with holding off on the meds until evidence of labs show otherwise. Has your dog had the LDDS test, if so, do you know what the results were? Atypical Cushing's is rare but is something every pet owner should at least take into consideration when a dog has classic signs but unsupported labs. http://bit.ly/1OvI8ZZ
Jen F. replied:
The office I go to (Gwinnett Animal Clinic in Lawrenceville) is a bit of a drive for you but Dr Wallis looked at Baby's blood work and immediately suspected Cushings and walked us through diagnosis and treatment. There is also North Georgia Veterinary Specialists. My Italian greyhound boy had ITP and IMHA a couple years ago and was getting worse and we saw Dr Cochran as an emergency (Zen had turned white and was urinating what looked like pure blood) and Dr Surdyk a couple days later. Dr Surdyk is an internal medicine specialist and really thorough and very nice to work with during such a stressful time.
Katherine B. replied:
Debra, 20% of dogs will either have or present with a bladder infection/UTI. You can do a UCC, urine cortisol creatinine ratio. This is a simple inexpensive way to rule out Cushing's. Further testing (LDDS) is only required if the results are abnormal. https://www.veritasdvm.com/documents/24501/56065/1346421998710_24501_210.pdf

I gave the information yesterday to have them contact Union County Animal Control, Officer waited for a call, no one has made a report of this situation. ACO needs a location if this is in fact Union County or they cant investigate this. UCAC could check on the matter, no one will be able to just remove the animals from the property without the owners consent or investigation with citations and warnings and well being checks. If owner surrenders however, UCAC can and does take farm animals immediately. That would remove the animals from their situation right away. UCAC is aware of the post, but no calls, names, address or phone number given to them yet. If this is a matter that needs attention, Union County Animal Control (618) 833-4915 and leave a message with reason for calling, name and return number. Please note ACO's return call shows up as a restricted call on your ID, Thanks

Lisa M. replied:
Hi Barb and welcome to you and Bandit. Just a couple quick notes for you: 1) I wouldn't make any food changes for at least a few months - you'll have a lot going on with starting/adjusting meds and if there's any weird response you won't know if its a side effect from meds or something from a food change 2) "homemade is best" is a myth - I work in the animal nutrition field and 99.9% of folks preparing their own food aren't doing it right and their dogs/cats are lacking key nutrients, there's plenty of great foods available in raw form, dehydrated/frreeze dried raw form, canned, kibble, etc 3) if you have a local independent pet shop (vs a big box retailer) that specializes in earthy-crunchy type food go in there and see what's available, check out DogFoodAdvisor.com, and just start to put feelers out - but again don't worry about a food change right now...let the meds start to do their work and THEN make another change, too much at once and you won't know what's working/not working/etc. Good luck :)

Taylor R. replied:
Don't be nervous at all. The vet in charge of keeping your dog alive knows exactly what he is doing. Many vets will take a dog off trilostane if the post ACTH number is <2 ug/dL. Dechra recommends discontinuation at 1.45 ug/dL.. The lower your dog's numbers drop increases the risk for adrenal crisis or permanent adrenal necrosis. Your girl is in good hands. No more trilostane until symptoms of Cushing's return which can take a week or two, then an ACTH must be done before she gets put back on the drug. Read under the heading 'Adjusting the trilostane dose when ACTH-stimulated cortisol values fall too low'. http://www.endocrinevet.info/2013/11/trilostane-prednisone-and-acth.html
