Here is a list of approved dog trainers from Anderson Animal Shelter. Please don't EVER use a trainer that uses aversive methods like prong collars or e-collars. Prong collars are NEVER appropriate and their use is not supported by research. I have seen dogs completely destroyed by aversive methods--trainers use them because they do show short term success. But long term, can have truly dire consequences. If you have questions, I, or Steven William Frost (the behaviorist at Anderson) can answer them. http://media.wix.com/ugd/09 e505_88 a2 f2 fafd19479482 f85656 a17072 cf.pdf

I got my rescue at Tails Humane Society out in DeKalb. The training fee was included in our adoption fee so I figured I would use them. Its about 30 minutes away every Saturday morning for 12 weeks. He's learning the basics like sit, lay, walking on a leash, jumping etc. The drive is what it is but he seems to like it and it's all positive reinforcement which I like.

These guidelines offered by the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior are critical in selecting a competent dog trainer. Be careful when choosing a trainer. It's a completely unregulated business. Trainers should be self-regulating and using modern, force-free methods based on the latest evidence in canine learning and behavior. Here are some guidelines set forth by the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior. Any trainer you choose should be adhering to these: https://avsab.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/How_to_Choose_a_Trainer_AVSAB.pdf

I offer in-home private training. I can coach you to train your own dog with sessions once a week, or come to your house while you are at work and train your dog for you. I also offer group classes for puppies. All force-free, effective, and humane - no choke, pinch, shock, kick, yell, squirt with water etc. PM me if interested. You also might want to take a look at these guidelines for finding a dog trainer put out by the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior. Dog training is an unregulated business, so be careful who you choose. Literally anyone can put up a shingle, call themselves a dog trainer, and do anything to your dog. Dog trainers need to self-regulate and if they are not complying with the guidelines set forth by AVSAB by using rewards-based methods, then it's sort of like a doctor dismissing scientific evidence or the AMA recommendations. For the sake of your dog, please be careful who you choose! http://avsabonline.org/uploads/position_statements/How_to_Choose_a_Trainer_(AVSAB).pdf
