Hi all. New to West Hartford and looking for a good but affordable vet. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

PetCare. Dr. Lauren Mascola. 64 Raymond Road in Blueback. 860-232-6060. She came highly recommended to me for our puppy and they've been amazing with her.
Meryl D. replied:
Veterinary Specialists of CT at 993 N Main St, West Hartford, (next to Hall HS.) 860-236-3273. Dr. Gus is great as are all the docs there!
Christine C. replied:
I go to Vet Specialists on N Main as well.....love them. I feel the cost is comparable to others. Very reasonable.
Rachel T. replied:
Another vote for Dr. Gus at Vet Specialists. (And if you need a great gym, you should check out Anytime Fitness - lol )
Susan W. replied:
Newington Veterinary Clinic. Just over the West Htfd town line, off Newington Rd., at 177 Day St. Low-key and very nice folks.
Sheila L. replied:
I like Laura at Petcare Vet next to Whole Foods ... but if it just vaccines etc the Petco Store by Westfarms Mall used to offer VERY cheap vaccines in "February love your pet month of", and vaccination clinics on alternating Saturdays - call ahead, the line for cheap vaccines can be long and time consuming and may not be worth your while. In any case, call, my info may not still be current.

CT Vet center 470 Oakwood Ave, West Hartford, CT 06110 (860) 233-8564 Very affordable, always available (they have a 24 hour ER). We see Dr. Hoppy (Hopkinson) and/or Dr. Cox. There's frequently a bit of a wait, though, since they treat emergencies.
Jessica M. replied:
Petcare! Dr. Mascola is wonderful!
Wendy F. replied:
Corey Shagensky at PAW in Avon. He lives right here in West Hartford and is awesome. Growing practice, does not push tests that you don't need, great staff!
Lisa P. replied:
Veterinary Specialists of CT (next to Hall High). Love their long hours as they are open most evenings but it's not at an after hours price. Also they have many vets and resident vets so there's a good chance they are able to take you last minute. I also appreciate their caring ways.
Jennifer S. replied:
Thanks for the recommendation Laura! Lee, PAW is my family's clinic. We opened 3 years ago and are a single doctor practice. We have won the Advocate's Best of Hartford in 2012 and 2013. Lee, please PM me if you have any questions- I'd be happy to answer them! The clinic's phone number is 860 325 2124 and website is progressiveanimalwellness.com. We are always happy to provide a written estimate at any visit so you understand any costs.
Marianne B. replied:
Dr. Jennifer Mascola, Raymond Rd., has been wonderful for me.
Marcy R. replied:
I love@CT Vet Specialists in the yellow "house" building next to Hall HS. They're not necessarily inexpensive, but LOVE THEM.

Meghan K. replied:
Veterinary Specialists Of Connecticut next to hall high school. They have lots of specialists, MRI, physical therapy, acupuncture. Also it's an emergency vet open 24 hours. http://www.vetspecsct.com/
Linda S. replied:
Over a 10 year period I had 2 bad experiences so I left. One was undiagnosed lymphoma and I was on vacation, came home immediately and she died. The last was I took my dog to be put down, they spent an hour trying to find her vein. I had to watch that happening and it was awful for poor Sophie. So then I went to CT Veterinary on Oakwood Ave (they also have ER right there ) and I am going to stick with them. I did try PetCare and they were very nice however it seemed to take a while for appt. The other thing I learned is that you can contact CT State Dept of Public Health and they have records on veterinarians who have had complaints lodged against them and what the resolution was. When I looked up Vet Specialists, they had been fined for something.
Hi everyone! Vet recommendations for first time puppy owners! Thanks in advance!!!
Vera M. replied:
I'm a fan if Newington Vet on dale road right over the line

Laura M. replied:
Veterinary Specialists next to Hall. Our dog had two surgeries due to an accident and they are compassionate and fair.
Rebecca P. replied:
We live on Oakwood but take ours to Vet Specialists by Hall. Oakwood was too expensive and impersonal for us.
Derek E. replied:
Go see Dr. Galbo at Veterinary Specialists on North Main St... she is great.
Lisa P. replied:
Veterinary Specialists on North Main. We've been taking our Bichon there since she was a puppy and she's now 15. They have a large staff, "regular" vets and specialists. Residents too so there are later hours. I recommend them highly for availability and quality
Steve M. replied:
Dr Galbo at Veterinary Specialists for sure (or anyone she recommends if she is too busy)
Meryl D. replied:
We love Veterinary Specialists of Ct: 993 N Main St, West Hartford, CT 06117 (860) 236-3273
Looking for recommendations and feedback on local veterinarians. We previously used CT Vet Center and although vet turnover was an issue and hearing other people unhappy...
Paula O. replied:
Agree- we've been to a few- none were bad but Dr Mascola is great! Very honest
Shelly S. replied:
You don't have to go to CT Vet Center (that place by Home Depot) for an emergency. We went there once because we didn't know any better but after that Dr Mascola referred us to Pieper Memorial or New England Veterinary Center. We choose Pieper and they're excellent. And there's no reason you can't go elsewhere for emergency care; we just wanted to go with one of her recommendations.
Diane K. replied:
Manchester vet- Dr Atz- holistic! He is the best!
Marri F. replied:

We are very happy with Dr. Mascola at PetCare on Raymond Rd WH.
Chris S. replied:
Broken record here. - love Dr. Mascola and her people. More the atmosphere of a grade school than a hospital - very sweet, kind, gentle, attentive people who love and care for animals and their people.
Susan W. replied:
Newington Vet Hospital. Just over the WH line.
Kim J. replied:
We have used Petcare (Dr. Lauren Mascola) for 10 years. She is wonderful. The entire staff is amazing!
Beth R. replied:
LOVE Dr. Mascola at Petcare. First-time pet owner (2 dogs rescued at once!) and they have been SO great.
Dana L. replied:
We go to Dr. Mascola too. She is great. The staff knew our dog by name and they know our cat too. When my moms cat passed away they sent us the sweetest most touching sympathy card. They really are amazing.
Wendy F. replied:
Progressive Animal Wellness in Avon. I've mentioned Dr. Shagensky on here before and will again if someone is looking for a vet. He lives in WH with his young family. He and his staff are awesome. No unnecessary tests, reasonable rates, friendly, professional. Reigning "Best Vet" in the area.
Kaelea T. replied:
We use Pet Care vet for our 15 month old lab and we LOVE them. We almost always have the same assistant. She's great with Dobby. We've seen two different veterinarians, although that's only because of our schedule. They have been great.
Shelly S. replied:
LOVE Dr. Mascola! Our dog has some slightly aggressive tendencies in unfamiliar situations and we used to have to muzzle her during exams at our old vet's request. We've never had to muzzle her there, she's that good. She also successfully diagnosed my dog with lupus after the specialist she referred us to at CT Vet Center refused to do the tests she requested and tried to tell us our dog was fine (she wasn't fine and three years later is doing well on prednisone).
Paul S. replied:
Dr. Bouchard at MacDonald Vet Clinic in Bloomfield is great. Caring staff and reasonable prices. I switched from Vet Specialists on No. Main because I didn't find the staff friendly and the prices were high. Also felt I was "oversold" on in-needed care.
Bryan A. replied:
Pet care vet in blueback. Dr Mascola is awesome!
Dana G. replied:
Macdonald Veterinary on Cottage Grove Road in Bloomfield. Dr. Bouchard is great as his staff. My pets have been going there for 15 years.

I second Dr Mascola near Whole Foods!!! She is wonderful.
Kate B. replied:
MacDonald Veterinary on Cottage Grove Road in Bloomfield--both my parents and my husband's parents took our childhood pets there, and we've stayed with them for over 20 years for two cats and four dogs so far. (I've also heard great things about Petcare and passed on the recommendation to people who don't want the trip to Bloomfield.)
Jennifer S. replied:
Please consider my husband's practice, Progressive Animal Wellness in Avon. It's just over the mountain at the base on the other side. We have won the Advocate's Best of Hartford Best Vet for the past three years since we opened. Please check out our reviews on yelp http://m.yelp.com/biz/paw-progressive-animal-wellness-avon and google. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. Or call the clinic if you want them to work up an estimate for you.
Jonathan W. replied:
Dr. Mascola and the staff at Petcare are fantastic for primary vet care. For off hours/emergency/specialty items we go to New England Veterinary up in Windsor.
Jean B. replied:
Another vote for Dr. Mascola
Kathleen C. replied:
Vet Specialists in N Main St WH It's where other vets send their patients for surgery and therapy
Lisa P. replied:
Veterinary Specialists of CT - on North Main near Hall High. They have a great group of "regular" vets and specialists (surgeons etc). This variety means you don't need to go to other vets for specialized care. They also have several "residents" who are on duty (on call) well into the evening. They have wonderful hours. They also have a great support staff as well. We trust them completely with our 15 year old pooch.
Michelle R. replied:
Bolton Vet! We've been going for thirteen years and all the doctors are great.
Tanya D. replied:
Dr. Mascola at Petcare in BlueBack! Very reasonable and a wonderful person and vet!
Victoria A. replied:
I think the CT Vet Center is the cheapest I've seen for still good quality care and services.
Lisa B. replied:
I second Dr. Mascola at Petcare - Both she and the staff are awesome!
Lisa P. replied:
Vet Specialists are very caring. We were there one holiday weekend recently with our dog. There was another family there to put their dog down. The dog was a patient of another West Hartford vet who would not help the family that weekend. They came to Vet Specialists who from what I saw were very caring and gave the family a sitting room to be with the pet. I can't speak to the costs because it's the only place we have taken our 15 yo dog.
Good Morning all, you guys steered me in the right direction for a Vet…we are going to & happy with P.A.W. in Avon. Great & friendly service! Now…any suggestions...
