Poor Rachel Cook. She asked a simple question of how to teather horses overnight and all of the "l've gotta better answer than you" elves came out of the woods. This isn't s right or wrong question. My opinion is, if you want to vent, stick with politics. Every horse person knows there are more than two ways to skin a cat, so pick your poison. Sorry, Rachel.
Daniel C. replied:
Like everything else, make sure you practice in a corral before taking the horse out overnight. There are lots of hobbles. My preference for overnight is a side hobble (front to back) rather than side to side. Hobbles can be made from soft nylon rope. Clinton Anderson sells them online. (clintonanderson.com or downunderhorsemanship.com.) I wouldn't worry about your horse laying down, likelihood is that being in new surroundings, he/she wouldn't lay down anyway. A second method, is to stake the horse. Finally, I suggest belling the horse, just in case he/she wanders off in the night, you'll have an easier time finding him/her in the morning.
Lanny C. replied:
Here is the video to stake out. they call it picket line but when I hear of picket liine I think calvary and a rope line 36-48" off the ground. on this video they use a chain and tie to front foot. I prefer using back foot and you will not need chain because they seldom step on rope: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuxDLioO1GA

If you are going through New Mexico, my husband and I love Silver City. We don't usually stay at RV parks or horse camps or anywhere else that you have to pay to camp. We like the BLMs and National Forest. Just before entering the city limit of Silver City is the Continental Divide trail head where you can camp. The Continental Divide trail goes for miles. There are also several other trails to explore there too. The trail head has quite a few camping sites that are nice. There are also a couple of camping areas just before you get to the Continental Divide trail head, as you're traveling east. It's national forest and hooks up to the Continental Divide trail. There is a lot of camping in Colorado. We live in Pagosa Springs during the summer and there's a great place here that has a natural hot springs in the river that is free to access. In Wyoming there is the Medicine Bow National Forest, on Happy Jack Road between Cheyenne and Laramie.
