Girlfriend and I are coming to Vancouver in August to kick off a bicycle tour. We've never been before. Where's the cheapest place to stay 2 nights that won't get us...

Be advised: bicycle theft and theft of possessions is rife here. Adjust your expectations for 'secure storage' up here. Every tourist season there are news stories where someone from somewhere turned their back 'just one minute' and their whole dream vacation was just screwed up because a local drug addict ran off with it.

I think the [Burnaby Cariboo RV Park](http://www.bcrvpark.com) is the closest one to town ... but rates are $42 a night for a tent. Wat?!?

I have a friend that hosts [couchsurfers](http://www.couchsurfing.org/) in vancouver. Free and I know that she, at least, will not mug or murder you. I get that not everyone is comfortable with this method of accomodations, but it's an option if you have a really slim budget.
stumo replied:
It's extremely unlikely that you would get mugged or murdered anywhere in Vancouver, and I'm not sure there is an equivalent.

I've heard good things about the [St Clair](http://stclairvancouver.com/cgi-bin/rez60 load.pl?0001/ab0001.html), but I've never stayed there myself. I love SF btw. Great city. I got lost in the Tenderloin area and found it much more frightening than anywhere I've been in Vancouver. Our equivalent of mugging is, in fact, being disrespected without apology... well, maybe just asked for change with a "thanks" when you don't give them any.

Vancouver is really quite safe compared to pretty much any major American city. Just use your smarts and you'll be fine. :) I hope you have a great time!

When I moved here I stayed in the cheapest hostel there is.. the American Backpackers... It's $10/night for the dorms. Its been years since I was there, but I'd imagine its the same.. It's..... interesting, to say the least! And there is bike storage inside. Not for the faint of heart though! http://www.ameribackpackers.com/

You're coming to Vancouver in August expecting beautiful sunshine? Shall I tell him, or you guys?

Watch your bike like a hawk. A bunch of disgusting druggie whores will run off with it in the blink of an eye.

I traveled last year and slept in my car at a rest stop anytime I was on the interstate. They always have water, real toilets, and they're usually well lit for security.
