I went through Equisure (Brenda Hess 303.614.6961) to purchase a Hartford policy and they have been fantastic.
Carleton H. replied:
My first horse wasn't very expensive, so some of the larger Insurance companies weren't writing policies that would cover him. I can't remember which one of them (Maybe Hartford) recommended I call Horse Insurance Specialists in Texas and that is who I ended up using. Very affordable and they break it down so you can see how adding x or y will change your rate. Thankfully, knock wood, I have never had to file a claim, so I can't speak to that. http://www.horse-insurance.com/

I just went through Dietrich Equine insurance. The policies are actually through American Reliable but they were the only company I contacted (out of 3-4) that was willing to try to get me coverage for my boy who is currently being treated for hind suspensory desmitis. Everyone else said he had to be completely healthy and sound for a year before offering coverage. They obviously placed an exclusion on hind suspensory issues but at least I now have mortality and major Med/surgical for other issues.
I use Marshall and Sterling for my OTTB and my Selle Francais. They were the only ones that I could find that would insure my OTTB because he was a rescue and I only paid $650 for him.

Valerie M. replied:
Hallmark Equine Insurance. I have mine through them. I am also an agent. Everyone is telling you accurate information regarding the price and coverage difference. The Mortality policy is your base policy and any medical coverage is in addition. Each company has different rates (though they are competitive with each other) and all offer different types of medical coverages that vary in price, deductibles, copays and sublimits.
Thinking of shopping for a new insurance company for our business. Any suggestions of a good agent or company that has any understanding of the event industry?

I use Jarvis Equine insurance. I don't think it's a red flag. Horses are insured for more than just mortality. Even if it's a $2,000 horse the price of colic surgery isn't lower than for a $50,000 horse
