Do you know of a good therapist in Louisville?? I'm looking for a therapist in Louisville over my winter break to help me with my unhealthy perfectionism and unrelenting...
praxis-sun replied:
The answer to this question is contingent upon what kind of therapy for which you are looking. Many people are content with going to a psychiatrist for medication to help with their anxiety. Other people are looking for coping mechanisms. And yet others want to dig into the neurosis and talk it out. I am not saying any of these are better than the other but what a "good" therapist *is* is usually going to be different for everybody.

I saw Carol Conaway, LCSW, for many years up until six or seven years ago. (I will definitely return to her, should I need her again.) At the time, I was living with extreme anxiety and significant depression. But I was striving for impossible perfection, too, in an already successful career and an already happy homelife. She really helped me get to the root of why I felt and behaved the way I did, and she gave me some great tools for working through it all. If you think you'd respond well to talk therapy, she's great. I've been in a very good place since seeing her. She's in the Starks Building downtown, on S. 4 th Street. Good luck to you. And take care. Living with anxiety is no picnic.

Not sure if you’d be interested in hypnotherapy, but I used to go to Louisville Hypnotherapy Academy. Dr. Oliver helped me A LOT with super bad anxiety and PTSD.

I always plug psychologytoday.com because I use it every time I move. You can filter by insurance type taken, primary clientele, and treatment specialties, etc. it also allows the therapists to give a description of themselves, so you can get a vibe before setting up a call.
MissyTheMouse replied:
My daughter sees Dr Kristi Thompson for a very similar issue. Dr Kristi calls it catastrophizing. She has helped my daughter overcome quite a lot , she's able to function in school without nearly as much anxiety. She doesn't minimize the way my daughter feels. And she helps her talk through creating a better response. Some techniques work better than others, but that is the nature of things. Whoever you find, I hope it helps. It's no fun living in a state of constant stress

winterdalliance replied:
Mandala House is a great practice and they'll do an intake with you to talk about what it is you need and what you're looking for, and even if you don't have a preference of provider they can match you with one.
Rock_Whisperer replied:
I don't feel this is the best place to ask around but would encourage you to reach out to your insurer. They can provide a list of therapists in network and you can look up your candidates online to read about their education, specialties, and sometimes find a small bio.

I'd highly recommend [Avenues Unlimited](https://avenuesunlimited.com/). I was in therapy there for a while and it made a positive and long-lasting impact on my life. I don't have any experience with unhealthy perfectionism, but I was pretty well acquainted with unrelenting anxiety. That is a thing of the past now. Eric Baker sr. was my therapist and he was very good. I did a few sessions with his son, Eric jr. and I can speak very highly of him as well. I never met with any of the other therapists, but I'm sure if they're working there they must be good.

I've had excellent luck with Avenues Unlimited Counselling Center. My main therapist is Eric Baker, Sr. I've also used Eric Jr. and they're both great at their job. They're located on Taylorsville Rd. just outside of the Waterson. I can't recommend them enough. I am now a confident, well-adjusted successful adult and I owe a lot of that to Eric. EDIT: Avenues Unlimited doesn't accept health insurance (at least they didn't last I checked and I don't believe that's changed), but even if you pay cash it's less than $150 per visit.

I went to Dr. Brian Monsma a few years ago when he was in Crescent Hill. I remember he was transitioning into a job at U of L as I was leaving so I don't know if he's still taking new patients, but I went from full on panic disorder to functional/getting better in a few months. You're making a good choice by getting started with therapy. My experience with mental health support in Louisville has been good. I also had a psychiatrist I saw at U of L a couple times and he was amazing, if you decide medication is the right route for you. The only bad experiences I had here in town were with my (former) GP. If you have more questions about my anxiety/treatment or if you just want to communicate with someone a little bit about anxiety you can PM me:)

Good for you for already recognizing the issues. That's half the battle during the road to recovery. Keep in mind you might have to go to your regular doctor first to get a referral. Congratulations! You've taken the first, and arguably the most important, step to recovery. I have a few recommendations about your search for a good clinician:
1. Find a specialist. While this is difficult, it will prove to be beneficial. Specialization means experience, and experience means expertise.
2. Go see a licensed clinical psychologist, not an MSW or a counselor. While many times people think they all do the same thing, but the scope of their training is widely different. Clinical psychologists are highly trained to work with clinical disorders, such as depression, anxiety, addiction, and trauma. Counselors and MSWs are generally trained to help people through more routine difficulties and life transitions.
3. Don't settle. Know what you need from a therapist and demand it. Demand evidence-based therapy and not outdated or phony therapy. If it feels weird to you, ask for the evidence and the research. If they can't give it to you, then walk right on out.

tazunemono replied:
I see Carrie Schanie at Sensible Psychiatric, it's in DuPont area.
Generally your primary physician can give you a list of psychiatrists that that recommend. You can also call your insurance company to see which of them would be in your network. After that you would have to call around to see which have openings. Unfortunately I am not familiar with outpatient psych docs. I wouldn't even feel like a recommendation to a particular one would even be too useful. This is because doctors in patients in this field build a rapport with eachother. One person's experience with one doctor can be entirely different from another's. From what it sounds like, you need a psych eval and desire treatment. My advise would be to follow the steps I described above. After that, after you have seen someone, if you don't like what they have to say, see someone else. Best of luck to you though. It can be tough to get in to see someone in the first place. Mental health is one of the oft forgot problems with most. I urge you to seek immediate help somewhere like Our Lady of Peace if you feel any inclination of harm to anything. I hope you the best.
