I am old and need old people advice about old people things. Does anyone have a local podiatrist recommendation? I have torn up my plantar fascia and have seen one...

I don't know of any podiatrists, but I am old. I wish we could have an old-person rva sub! Anyway - you have a cute dog.

I know my dad has gone to The Foot Center on Patterson and seen Dr. Eng and has been pleased. Beautiful husky.

I went to Dr. Shadbolt. Got orthopedics and Diclofenac. He seemed very knowledgeable and came highly recommended by a client of mine.

Not to sound like an infomercial, but I used to get some pretty extreme pain from my plantar fascia when I would wear anything besides sneakers. Boots, dress shoes, hiking boots whatever. After buying into the 2009 barefoot running hype I bought a pair of extremely minimal running shoes and adjusted my stride to match. After a month of running short distances starting at a couple of blocks and building to a couple miles in those non-shoes I found that I no longer felt that the bottom of my instep was about to snap in twain no matter how long I spent standing or what kind of shoes I wore. I am a believer.

I had it before and was in horrible pain then I started googling and found a video on how to tape your feet up when you have plantar fascia it was instant relief and was able to work 12 hours on my feet with no problems at all. And it healed pretty quickly. So go on youtube and search "tape feet for plantar fascia"

I think at 62 that I am one of the older denizens of /r/RVA, but I have good feet for the most part.

Not an old person but someone who's had 4 knee surgeries. Take a look at West End orthopedic.

I have plantar fasciitis and am not old (23). But I guess it's because I am young that I haven't seen anyone about it.

Hey there, I work in a shoe store for people with very sensitive or hard to fit feet, and the vast majority of people that we see here are dealing with some amount of plantar fasciitis. It can be really aggravating and difficult to get rid of, but here are my recommendations:
* Obviously having well-fitting shoes is going to be important. I would recommend sticking with closed back shoes with some kind of positive closure (i.e. laces or velcro, something you can adjust)
at least as long as you are in acute pain.
* Orthotics are very helpful for a lot of people. There are some decent ones you can get out of a box, but they are designed for people with an average shaped foot, average arch height, etc. Look into having some custom made for your feet. They will be more expensive, probably a few hundred dollars, but certainly cheaper than surgery.
* Stretching and icing are often helpful too. There are plenty of videos on YouTube that can show you the proper technique.
* I would certainly never discourage you from seeing a podiatrist either. We get a lot of people in here that have gone to Earnest Foot and Ankle, and our customers generally speak very highly of those guys. They also make good custom orthotics, I have seen their work first hand and fit them into a lot of shoes.
Good luck OP, I hope at least some of this was helpful!

Dr. Weiss at West End Foot & Ankle would be my recommendation. Extremely prompt and courteous which is not a combo you find in doctors terribly often. I hope you and your dog are walking together again soon. Plantar fasciitis is horrible. Get some super feet inserts!
