ripeaspeaches replied:
Did you mean [Mosca's](http://moscasrestaurant.com/index.html) or [Middendorf's](http://middendorfsrestaurant.com/)?
JazzFestFreak replied:
out in that direction, charlies seafood is amazing. On Jefferson Hwy. Don't downvote me until you have had it!! To do any better, you have to confirm west or east bank. Mosca's is superb, but on the westbank.
Contraflow replied:
Ristorante Da Piero, at the end of Williams Blvd between River Road and the railroad tracks.
504boy replied:
Mosca's is thirty minutes out but definitely not on the east bank. You should ask food critic Tom Fitzmorris. He has the most exhaustive list of restaurants in GNO area on his site at [nomenu.com](http://www.nomenu.com/). [Here](http://www.nomenu.com/joomla1/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&id=181&Itemid=146) is a list of Creole-Italian restaurants on his site.
Fozzworth replied:
Hmm I'd say Rocky and Carlo's but that's not down river road. Mosca's or Middendorfs sounds right though
slidellian replied:
Matt & Naddy's? It's where Freret meets the river.

CJ Lunch Bar is famous with their cheese buldak and it's quite cheap too
negativeblame replied:
Mook Ji Bar in the CBD, cheap, filthy and fixes the soul.
Spartengerm replied:
There's a place along Victoria st Abbotsford under Woolworths, don't know what it's called but it's tiny and very very good.
continuousline replied:
Oriental Spoon on Elizabeth Street has awesome cheese-buldak! I also recommend Oree on Queen St, always empty, awesome food and such nice staff.
ashleighclair replied:
SamSam on Swanston is great!
Walter_Ego replied:
haven't found anywhere with good chijeu buldak, usually just make it at home (following something along the lines of maangchi's pretty simple recipe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9 uI1-6Ac6A). interested to know if you find anywhere that doesn't serve it white man hot instead of actually hot.
chirishnique replied:
There used to be a place called goshen on kings way in Glen Waverley. I think it moved to Collingwood? If possible, try there.
AussieGirl18 replied:
Oriental spoon is pretty decent. they have 2 locations in the CBD
Ckb79 replied:
My favourite by a long shot is Don Woori up st the top of the Queen Vic market, amazing food and cheap prices. Be prepared to queue though but it's worth it
Articulatte replied:
Never been myself, but a lot of people say Oppa is good and affordable

ChangGo on Little Latrobe Street is great - food is fantastic, cheap, and the place is quite relaxed. Can get busy with Korean students so sometimes there's a queue to be seated but service is fast so the wait isn't too long.
Nicky_Tremolo replied:
Thanks everyone for the great suggestions! You're all making me hungry... Just booked Oriental Spoon on La Trobe!

Big Mama by the Swanston/queensberry tram stop. Big portions for decent prices. I love their Kimchi fried rice w garlic prawns
Can anyone recommend a really nice Japanese restaurant? I'm not sure what else to add. Gf likes Japanese, and I'd like to have a low key surprise birthday dinner with...
circle_square_leaf replied:
If you like soba check out Shimbashi Soba. Super delicious, genuine atmosphere, good selection of Japanese beers and sake (the rice beer is so crisp and delicious). Should come in at around 60 bucks for the 2 of you with drinks and a shared desert. Definitely recommend.
confounded_again replied:
A tiny bit north of the cbd is Akita Japanese and that is wonderful and excellent value. They offer a tasting set of sake - 3 for $10 I think
kappuru replied:
Aka Siro in collingwood is legit, and less expensive than a lot of worse options. The entire staff is japanese, they make a great kakubin highball, and you can order in Japanese if you like!
Yanley replied:
Nishikian at Forest Hill's pretty good.
Walter_Ego replied:
nobu in the cbd is really, really good, but a little on the expensive side
BinaryGuy01 replied:
Don Don's cheap and tasty. near melbourne central.
CaptainBoob replied:
Hanabishi is one of the better Japanese restaurants around in Melbourne (I prefer it to Nobu or Kokos). It can go pretty expensive if you want to splash out, but if you actually make it to a lunch time session it's cheaper and I think you can get a pretty good meal for "special occasion but not ball busting" tier pricing. Located in King St, CBD, and they have great desserts.
testbug0 replied:
Good Japanese food tends to be more on the expensive side. Since you mentioned budget constraints, if you specified a budget for the two of you, it'd be easier to make more appropriate recommendations. And what type of Japanese food specifically? Ramen? Sushi? Teppanyaki? etc. Good ramen places are probably the cheapest option but the ambience is more of a fast food joint than a restaurant, not sure if it'd be appropriate for a birthday party.
eatlivemosh replied:
Ichi Ni Nana Izakaya Brunswick St is amazing!
redmedguy replied:
I would have suggested an old favourite of mine, Wabisabi Garden in St Kilda, but it's apparently closed down since I last went. Sad, because it was pretty damn good.
Jess_alterego replied:
Asakusa in Malvern east is my choice. Fantastic sashimi and it’s not particularly expensive
ZoboCamel replied:
[Aya Teppanyaki](http://www.ayateppanyaki.com/) in Armadale was fantastic when I went there a few months back. Not the cheapest, but they've usually got deals on Scoopon that make it about $40 per person for a 10-ish course meal. Definitely worth it in my books.
shrug_lord replied:
Aka Siro in Collingwood. Honestly the most authentic Japanese place in the area. Run by Japanese people and serves great contemporary Japanese dishes. I lived in Japan for 3 years, I rate it.
notasgr replied:
I really like [Izakaya Hachibeh](http://www.hachibeh.com.au/), on Bourke St.
melvinlee88 replied:
Mr Ramen San at Bourke st for pretty good ramen - and free refill of noodles.

Brother shota in Middle park
HeathenCyclist replied:
Ichi Ni in St Kilda is nice; outdoors with a view off the bay/sunset, or at the bar talking to the sushi chef. Or a bit of both.
Hemingwavy replied:
Nobu on Southbank. Enjoy paying $110 for sashimi for two.
crayoncrayoncrayon replied:
Try Mr. Miyagi at Chapel Street in Windsor or Wagaya at Bourke Street if you prefer CBD area
Styrenic replied:
My two favourite places to take someone are izakaya chuji, lower budget but good selection and great atmosphere. Has a bar next door. Japanese teppanyaki inn is more expensive but they have set menus and it feels like a formal Japanese restaurant. Waitresses in kimonos etc.
Kageru replied:
Japanese is tricky, it's hard to find something in the middle range between price and quality. New one just opened in mid-city arcade (yokocho? Not wagaya though, it's bad), momo was okay but noisy so no restaurant vibe, Gypsy and Pig has always been reliable and Izukaya den is really not that much more expensive than a lot of other unimpressive options. Akakochin has changed hands and gone down hill. Chuji and Yamato used to be better as well I think. Lots of options for good Ramen of courses.
turkeyspit replied:
Teppanyaki inn on Collins street! Really nice place. Delicious food. Oldest teppanyaki restaurant in Melbourne
FreakySpook replied:
Cheap Classic Japanese: Yamato in Corrs lane Izakya and Drinks: Robot Bar in Bligh place Nice but wont break the budget: Yuzu off Collins St.
say_leek replied:
Shoya on Market Ln in CBD does course sets for around $35-$45 a person. Pretty good overall.
WTF-BOOM replied:
Sakura Kaiten is a sushi train restaurant and really good, though you have to book in advance, and specifiy you want to be seated at the train and not one of the tables off to the side for the full experience. Robot Sushi isn't a restaurant, but a great small sake bar (if your girlfriend likes sake). I've ended up there many times after a meal in the city.
mtrutch replied:
Kisume on Flinders Lane is great but a little expensive.
staticp replied:
Izakaya Den - http://www.izakayaden.net/ Or Mr Miyagi :)
MichaelPowerson replied:
Ocha in kew... quite pricey, probably 75 a head + drinks
MattJak replied:
Shyun in Carnegie is amazing! Awesome service, great food at awesome prices and you can order food as you go on iPads or if that’s not your thing get a menu. Couldn’t recommend any higher
Visiting Melbourne for a long weekend. Your restaurant recommendations? Hi all, Brisbane-native here.
The GF and I are visiting Melbourne for a long weekend in June....
trueschoolalumni replied:
Sounds like you're pretty familiar with the bigger restaurants around town. If you're not looking to spend Rockpool $$, then think about Chin Chin, Supernormal, Longrain, Gingerboy, Isakaya Den, those kinds of places. For cheaper/cheerful options, look at Sushi Hotaru, Hakata Gensuke Ramen, Misschu, Din Tai Fung, Gami Chicken and Beer, Belleville, Touche Hombre (all CBD), Hophaus (Southbank), Munich Brauhaus (more South Wharf). Hope that helps.
missilefire replied:
Ehn - Chin Chin - when you've got 3 hours to kill waiting in a queue. Fuck that. I went to Phillipe on Friday and it was excellent. The chef is my fave French chef in town, I've been to every restaurant he's run. Had really good rotisserie duck breast & duck leg confit. Good upmarket bistro style food.
Anonymous replied:
Lazy Moe's.
turtleltrut replied:
Chin chin have a few branch off sister restaurants, I'd suggest them instead, no massive waits! Kong in Richmond is one. Gazi is awesome and it's in the CBD.
zanderman22 replied:
It's not the cheapest place in Melbourne, but [Red Spice Road](https://wheresgood.to/one/3978) does a great Thai, if that's your thing.
PatrickWain replied:
DON'T LISTEN TO ANYONE EXCEPT ME: Zia Teresa, in Brunswick. This is the realest Italian food you'll ever eat outside of Italy AND it's a stunning romantic restaurant AND it's next to the best gelateria in Melbourne AND there's a killer bar between them AND it's a short tram trip from the CBD.
