You should join the meetup groups that are in Brickell. I always go there for the meet up happy hours. Oct 14 th we are meeting up in Blue Martini. Coconut Grove is always a fun place to hang out. I can't help you on cheap hotels.. I don't know much about that. I've haven't been long in Miami(4 months).

The jazz hostel on Miami beach always seems to have decent people staying there. Grand central is my favorite spot to get wild at. It's really awesome and they have tons of good shows(just saw mord fustang last night) . The electric pickle is pretty good too.
