Traveling to Montreal soon. Need lodging recommendations. Preferably hostels or something cheap-ish and safe. Proximity to downtown (or a way to get there fairly easily)...

Look up places on http://www.airbnb.com/ and you'll never need a hostel + hotel again. Awesome service

going back about 10 years we stayed at [La Tour Centre Ville Apt 400 boulevard Rene-Levesque Ouest Montreal, QC H2Z 1V5, Canada (514) 866-8861](http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Montreal&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=55.060677,135.263672&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Montreal,+Communaut%C3%A9-Urbaine-de-Montr%C3%A9al,+Quebec,+Canada&ll=45.503805,-73.56411&spn=0.013595,0.033023&t=h&z=16&iwloc=lyrftr:h,4027108667313691638,45.504873,-73.564872) It was an efficiency apartment type hotel --not real fancy but very affordable ---it was very centrally located, especially for the Jazz Festival --many musicians stayed there--- close to China Town ( 2 blocks) Old City (maybe 5-7 blocks) downtown (beginning maybe 5 blocks away or so)--the funky Rue St Catherine ( 1 block) ---very centally located and very utilitarian rooms priced at the low end of room rates in Montreal . I was a Bicycle tourist and they would either let me take my bicycle up to the room or let me stash it in a storage area on the ground floor. This info is 10 years old so YMMV

Try couchsurfing.com. There are tons of nice people (including myself) who are happy to take visitors.

Try a Canadian style Bed & Breakfast - many of them are not like the pricey US version. They can be a spare room in someone's house. And they'll serve you breakfast in the morning. Simple & inexpensive. [B&B Montreal Canada](http://http://www.bbcanada.com/quebec/montr%E9 al/montreal) And no, I'm not Canadian.

FYI: Quebec won't accept your medical card from whatever Province you're from if you need to go the hospital or a doctor. They'll give you a bill, and they *may* require you to pay some or all of it before you leave, but with a receipt you should be able to get (fully) reimbursed by your Province's medical care. I realize you didn't ask about this at all, but I figured you should know Quebec doesn't work with other-Province medical cards the same way as the rest of Canada.

Havre Familial in Ste Beatrix (1.5 hr drive) have chalets with or without elecricity. I'm more of a wild camping person but went there this summer for a fishing trip. I tent camped but they have different cottages available. Great place. I don't but if you have kids there are endless activities! Boating, beach, archery, restaurant etc... If the website is a little too confusing, lol, call, they were great at answering questions over the phone. http://www.havrefamilial.com/
