Hi guys, my beloved Land Cruiser will need some attention. I'm currently in Cusco, Peru.
Any good experiences with mechanics in Peru? Or would you recommend sitting it...

Hi Tim, we had last week some service at Overland Garage in Cuzco (see ioverlander). They did service on automatic gear box, plus some soldering on the camper. Our experience was the guys are skilled, but were a bit disappointed on our Dodge Ram. They looked more used to work on big truck and busses. Anyway, the job was done well. Price was good on working hours, but parts and oil were very expensive (in regards of our last service in Panama).

Tim Linßer we will be looking for a place La paz for a service and small repairs in the next couple of days...let us know if you are up this way. If its just a little squealing from the brakes pop into any of the tyre / brake shops they are really cheap to quickly check the brakes and give them a clean. Probably better to have it checked sooner rather than later.
Martin McGowan we are at Machu Picchu atm and will spend another couple days in Peru afterwards. I'd expect us to be in Bolivia in a week from now. Nevertheless please let me know how the service goes. All the best

Tim Linßer: The video where Benjamin Shamir was talking about, with my 17 year old daughter doing the brakes of my TLC HJ60. Same brakes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWFkcFeRe3M

I would say Quinta LaLa campground in Cusco or Hotel Oberland in La Paz would be a great place to take a closer look and possibly make the repair. Lots of other travelers to borrow advice/tools from and fairly convenient locations for finding parts. You'll save some money and learn more about your vehicle. I rebuilt my brake calipers at Quinta LaLa (thanks Bill Rayner for the guidance).

Souvenirs Wim, we get every few month 20-30 kg of spare parts from visits! wink emoticon
Michel B. replied:
Brenton you get chinese crap... look at toyodiy.com for the part numbet and go with this number to the toyota dealer. Install chinese and do the work again very soon and probably at the worst location. ..
Michel B. replied:
Toyodiy says for an 94 FZJ80 it's part number 04466-60020

Michel Buchs , Hawk makes 6 types of pads. Did you use the SD? http://www.hawkperformance.com/performance-street/pads
Benjamin S. replied:
I wonder if you can upgrade your calipers to bigger ones?!? I know that some 4Runner owners replaced their smaller calipers with 00-02 Tundra's with great success. Rebuild calipers are quite cheap. I upgraded my 2000 Tundra's calipers with bigger ones and quite pleased. I also upgraded the rear drums with the heavier Toyota Sequoia's. Try googling it. http://www.4 wdtrips.net/forum/showthread.php...

Nope, you just can't have enough quantum mechanics in one day - especially not on Max Planck's birthday! Here's a lovely video by @minutephysics on the origins of...
