If you have items not suitable to give to a charity, freecycle.org can help, too. I had a bunch of styrofoam sheets from large shipping boxes and didn't want to send them to the landfill. A community member took them for crafting. There are folks who may take nonworking appliances and such, as well, to repair and use or sell, or to sell for scrap.
