Bike shop recommendations? I just moved to town about 2 months ago and seeing as how there are no hills here, I think I'm in the market for a single speed,(not a fixed...

I would avoid Manifesto on 40 th if you need to get repairs. I went there to get new break pads installed and my rear wheel replaced and they charged me $25 for labor and $25 for break pads. $50 for the rear wheel was expected. At Hank and Franks they were willing to do the same work for a quarter of the price. I'm sure Manifesto is good for fixies, but I would avoid them for repairs. I felt violated...

No hills? You must live in a different Oakland, California than the one I know.

Manifesto at 40 th & Webster is probably the best shop for single-speed stuff. The owners are cool and they have a little pop up shop right now on Broadway (at 9 th-ish?). Montano Velo on Piedmont is my favorite all-around shop and they do good work. Bay Area Bikes has really, really friendly staff and all the essentials, but their actual bike stuff is almost exclusively aimed at commuters. My favorite shop in SF is Box Dog Bikes (especially if you need bags, racks, and bike touring shit), and Freewheel is also pretty good.

Recycle bicycle on Sacramento is awesome. They'll build you a bike for cheap if that's your thing.

You can get some decent new single speeds at [Manifesto Bikes](http://www.wearemanifesto.com). [Homespun Bikes](http://www.homespunbikes.com) is an awesome shop. They're a bike shop and city garden shop. They also host interesting workshops. If you're into learning how to fix your own bike or want to get used bikes and bike parts, there are a number of DIY bike coops in Oakland. [Spokeland](http://spokeland.org) in North Oakland [The Bikery] (http://thebikery.weebly.com) in East Oakland EDIT: Formatting

Thanks, Nathan Woody! I'll send you a PM, but it might go to your "Other" inbox since we're not direct connections. Moya Poparad: Great points. I suppose it's more reliable to go by my inseam (exactly 32 in), but I'm finding that bike measurements are just as reliable as women's pant sizes. Apparently, 54 cm Specialized bikes are best for my build and I took one for a test ride to be sure. I had considered ordering a bike from an online retailer, but I'm afraid the fit won't be quite right either.:P
Anyone know of a used bike shop in the city or Oakland where I can pick and choose parts to make a custom bike? Does something like that exist? Walking sucks
