Dr Rajini is booked up to a yr at her clinic in Bangsar Village.. 1 st question they ask is the kids's age?..It's very difficult to access a child that is below 3. Bangsar Village phone number is 0196059000 .
Shan Y. replied:
my son's issues turned around with therapies that open up neuro pathways. Speech therapies didn't do a dent at all. We were trying YEARS to get my son to articulate certain sounds correctly. We were with Sunway (Dr. Rajini and the SLP there) My son "had" very very rigid oral muscle movement and at one point, i was told he may not be able speak. We tried all sort of tricks, speech therapies, speech-xercise, speechtools... Only after I started therapies that helps reconnect/activate neuropathways, most issues just got resolved. Example, sucking water using a curly straw with eyes closed (HANDLE program). Sometimes simple exercise like this when done regularly can help to connect many neuropathways.
Elizabeth L. replied:
Shan Yap.. Can I have more information on this neuro pathway therapy you are suggesting? My son has dyspraxia, diagnosed by dr Rajini and one of his issues is that there's lesser connection between his left and right brain. He has benefitted a lot from both st and ot since he is 2 years old.. Now he is going to be 6. Honestly there's a big lack of ST in Msia... Imagine those living in the small towns.

Hi Fizzi Teh & Annie Then, I am not in a position to advise u if your children need speech therapy. I sent my child for an evaluation by a Occupational Therapist and it is believed that my child is a slow learner and not speaking clearly and coupled with poor communication skill even though she is already 4 yo. Ultimately, it is best to consult a doc to find out what causes the stated symptoms and then your doc will be able to advise your onward actions. I have madr appointment to meet Dr Rajini fr desaparkcity medical centre but my turn to see her is June 2014. Meanwhile, I am putting her for some occupational therapies and hopefully can find her a suitable speech therapy real soon. At the same time, I am always in the lookout for pre-school which is suitable for a slow-learner like her. I am fighting against time but I guess I can only take one step at a time. Most importantly, never give up hope on your l.o and remember u t not alone! Seek support and Seek references and professional guidance.

This mom Suet posted all the Kebangsaan schools that have special needs classes for her son who is dyslexic. Check out the list of schools, call them and ask if they have anything that can help your daughter http://dyslexiainmalaysia.wordpress.com/schools-with-dyslexia-programme/

Hi. I stay in BJ too. I just started HS my dyslexic 11 yo this year. Previously she was in Sapura Smart School for 2 years. The school was good bcoz she discovered her strength in non academic fields. And teh environment is very supportive. But I pull her out this year bcoz the academic syllabus is very heavy for her. When she was 7 yo, we pulled her out of school for intervention. She spent 6 months in the National Dyslexic Centre Subang Branch: 2, Jalan USJ 6/2B, 47610, UEP Subang. Tel: 03-5631 3919. They focus on reading, writing and Maths. You can check them out.

Tks Jasmin:) A bit about my son. I suspected dyspraxia when he was 18 months old. but that's because I'm trained to look at disabilities ya. We had him formally diagnosed when he was 2+ yo by Dr. Rajini, a developmental pediatrician. If you need to see a doctor for a medical diagnosis of any child under 12 years old, do see a DEVELOPMENTAL PEDIATRICIAN and not a general one. My son's medical diagnosis is Developmental Coordination Disorder. When he was first diagnosed and despite my extensive reading and suspicion, my hubby and I felt like we were drowning. All we cared about was whether he could survive if we died before him. This is what we can tell you now about a diagnosis.....It.Does.Not.Matter. Not one single bit.

if you like to read, I recommend "The Out of Sync Child" by Carol Kranowitz. She's an occupational therapist, writing about children who have sensory processing disorders. She writes in an engaging manner and gives many helpful ideas that you can do with your child at home without having to buy expensive gadgets. For all children, but more so for dyspraxic children, the brain-body connection is oh-so-important.
Farah A. replied:
Kheng Loh, do read Carol Kranowitz's book. Lots of practical ideas.
Florence W. replied:
Dr. Rajini is a loving and dedicated doctor. Seeing her gave us peace!:) Only problem is the waiting list to see her is very long.
Shan Y. replied:
She is seeing patients in her own clinic in Bangsar as well. I like Dr. Rajini Kheng Loh if you don't mind second hand, I can sell you my book (very good condition and wrapped up). We have moved on. My son have had whole woks of issues, Gross, fine and SI. at 2 yo his was assessed to function like a 9 month old. After less than 2 years. Apart from slight hearing sensitivity. Pretty much the rest of the issues are all gone. his fine motor was assessed to be equivalent to 5yo when he was 3.5yo. (I know we shouldn't benchmark but hey, it's part of his developmental asessment that I do regularly to identify gaps to work on. But it does not mean I am not accepting who he is.). We did a lot of simple things. Playing swing, using chopstick to pick up different sizes of objects, treading games, walking on straight line, braingym type of cross body movement, most importantly, jogging and swimming. And many other simplest things that does not really cost much money (except the bolster swing which the entire family including myself enjoy). So, happy to let go of my book. PM me.

Delia Duarte, my 6 year old girl is also dyslexic. Got her tested last year. Have been homeschooling her since end of November and seen progress in her reading and writing skills. Her maths are fine and so is her vocabulary and creativity. I decided not to do Phonics with her since she is unable to and taught her to read whole word / sight word. I went to the Persatuan Dyslexic Centre in Shah Alam to get her assessed and lucky for me, the assessor advised me on how to help her along at home (her centre is full). Her dad will be putting her into a Montessori style kindy in June (worried about her making friends - he, not me) and registered her to a SK school for the coming year. I decided to let her try out one year (to show hubby that she might not be able to fit in and will have potential problems, since he thinks that she is fine like her two older brothers, could not accept the fact that she is dyslexic). I will be calling up the education department to find out more on any updates of schools with special programs for dyslexic children and then post the information here. Take care.
Farah A. replied:
Delia Duarte, with colors and shapes, as with other concepts, the idea is to expose Lea to them in ways that make sense to her and therefore create meaning for her. It should be part of your everyday vocab and done in incidental ways, e.g. when she needs to get dressed in the morning, show her two pieces of clothing and ask "do you want the red skirt or the blue skirt?". Give her a choice between two colors. This choice giving can be done with anything - food, shapes, etc. use playdoh to create alphabet shapes together. This activity is great because it employs all senses i.e. seeing the playdoh, feeling it in her hands, smelling it, creating something with it. As haslinda says, the focus is not the alphabets. the focus is the sensations and the fun. never ask her to repeat words or alphabets or colors after you. You want to expose her to them and let her brain sink the information in and make sense of it. Give her brain time to process it. Once she is ready, she will show you in myriad ways her understanding.
Delia D. replied:
Farah Alkaf, yes she did say a red car is apple and my orange car is well orange.. but when i showed her a red dress she said, "color":D. Will get play doh, reason why we didn't hv it earlier was because she used to eat it..

Hi there. Thanks for the tag Mandana Rastgoo. I am working at Gleneagles, Ampang as a Speech and Language Pathologist. I wouldn't mind taking him under my client load but it's pretty far from the preferred location. In Malaysia, there are Speech and La nguage Pathologist specialized in adults and paediatrics respectively. In Adults, I would recommend Cecelia Santiago(NASAM/Sunway Medical Centre) and Oo Kah Peng(Kota Kemuning). Both of them will be able to guide you accordingly. Please find their numbers in your message box. Thanks and hope this helps. If the treatment doesn't go the way you've imagined it would be, we at Gleneagles would be glad to help you out. Thanks.

My FIL was admitted to 2 different hospitals within 8 months for fever and lung infection respectively. These came after he refused to eat and drink. At both hospitals, many doctors ran a number of tests and could find nothing wrong. Speech therapists checked him out and said he still has swallowing ability though weakened. He has mild stroke over 2 years ago and has developed mild dementia. He had not been eating well as he constantly kept food or water in his mouth. Then had to ask him to spit out. A doctor at the first hospital concluded that as there was nothing wrong with his tests, it was likely depression. He prescribed anti-depressant. My MIL gave him half the dosage for a week only and then he seemed to be able to swallow better. 7 months later, early this year, he again refused to eat and drink. Grown very thin. This time, doctor at 2nd hospital recommended tube feeding because they need to administer medicines too. Hospital provided tube that last 2 weeks but we found out there is silicone tube which is softer lasting 6 weeks. More expensive. We bought from hospital pharmacy and gave to nurse to insert. Back home, fed him half dosage of antidepressants for less than a week. His mood seemed to pick up but he continued to be on tube. The following 3 months, he was only on powdered milk recommended by dietician. He gained good weight. Then my MIL fed him a small amount of soft food through the mouth. He swallowed, mostly. Not long after, he pulled out his tube. As he was still not eating more or drinking, we put him on tube again. But continued to feed through mouth. A week or 2 later, he pulled out the tube again. We let it be. My MIL reminded him several times that without the tube, he must eat to get enough nutrition. Now still have some feeding challenges, but quite acceptable. Consider your father's emotional state too.
