Reader question: Good morning! "My son was diagnosed with ADHD by our pediatrician last November, and while we really love her, we feel like there is probably a better...
Elizabeth R. replied:
DuPont & CHOP have long waiting lists ( over. A year), but Crozer hospital has an excellent Developmental Pediatrician, and the wait list was less than 2 months. They are specialized, evaluate, and can handle medical management, but don't push meds and they can offer referrals ( My son had sensory issues, so I got an Occupational Therapy (Theraplay) evaluation- Theraplay is amazing!!) I also went through Child Guidance Resource Centers in Coatesville. They have walk in evaluation hours mon- fri, no appt necessary. They then schedule a further evaluation by a psychologist. They also have a psychiatrist that does psychiatric evaluations and/or medical management. Child Guidance does a great evaluation and really works with the parents through the whole process. If your child should need wrap around services, based on diagnosis, they help you get approved for medical assistance based on diagnosis. They have specialized therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, people that work with the insurance companies to get help, case managers, etc. If wrap around services are needed, then they support you through the whole process and if they can't staff it, they send your case to another counseling service that offers wrap around services and can staff it. Also, sometimes children are quickly diagnosed with one thing, but a more extensive evaluation, like the ones I got at Child Guidance, found another diagnosis. It's best to know early on for sure a full detailed evaluation, to see that the help you get is catered to the all your child's needs as early on as possible. ( my sons kindergarten thought he had ADHD, but I found he had high functioning Aspergers and a Sensory Disorder (sensory craving)- just like ADHD, my son struggles with impulse control, focus, sitting still, he's overly talkative, very social, and has to touch everything). If your child is under 5, the Chester County Intermediate Unit can help with evaluating and helping your child. If your child is school aged, start with the school guidance counselor and/or school psychologist and ask to have your child evaluated. If you ask, they are obligated to provide one, at the schools cost. They will ask you to do a home evaluation. They will also evaluate your child in the classroom and in school. Based on their findings, they will diagnosis and use that for your child's IEP, and give your child help in school. It's good if possible to have both help inside and outside the school. **I wanted to add that I have spent nothing out of pocket for any of these evaluations. Insurance paid for evaluation and as soon as Child Guidance gave me the diagnosis, because Aspergers falls under Autistic Disorder, the diagnosis got him on Medical Assistance, which covers all his wrap around services ( in home behavioral specialist, mobile therapist, occupational therapists). I'm a single mom, so I'm fortunate for this. If you have the money for private therapists and evaluations and services, great. However, I assure you the level of care that I got through Child Guidance Resource Centers was excellent and just as great and helpful as private specialists.

We often work with families where a member has ADHD. We can help parents work better as a team, help kids understand why a sibling may behave in difficult ways, or how they can help be part of supporting and encouraging the family member with ADHD. We also work to make sure everyone understands how ADHD impacts executive function so the family becomes/stays a safe place where people feel loved and understood, as people with ADHD sometimes feel very criticized and "not good enough" and can struggle with self esteem issues. We're happy to be a resource: www.shelbyrileymft.com

We love Dr. Schwartz. The office is always helpful and we've never had to wait more than 5 minutes. My three year old was a NIGHTMARE for her well checkup and they were totally understanding when I requested to reschedule (it was a really bad week for us to begin with). And again when she was still dramatic for the second appointment. Lol

Coventry Pediatrics - specifically Dr Philip Cook. He is AMAZING! He took care of my older sons when they were little, he used to have a practice in NE Philly. When we move we are even close to him, we are going to go back to him. (610) 326-8660.

BTW, I have been super happy with our pediatrician at the CHOP office in Chestnut Hill. I know that's too far for you guys, but one really nice perk of the CHOP pediatric offices is that you can reach a CHOP nurse by phone round the clock.

Tracie and I have used Penn Medicine for almost everything. It's a great network and the doctors are top notch. The PCFK Limerick office has been great. The receptionist, nurses and doctors have all been great the six or so times we have been there since Liam's birth almost 8 weeks ago

We use Dr. Schwarts at Penn care for kids, also a teaching hospital. Victoria is now seeing Dr. Amy Klien in the same practice just because she is a girl:) I like how Dr. Schwarts is a strait shooter and I trust his knowledge very much. I personally go to Dr. Stephanie Kaliner located near Redners. She is a DO she is a family dr so she sees all ages.

I thought Dr Nathan Brown was the older Dr on Main St in Phoenixville who wore really thick glasses and the Pediatrician Dr Brown walked with a cane due to Polio and had office out by Kleyona Ave & Nutt Rd
Kelley W. replied:
Dr Nathan Brown had a son who also is a Dr ( over in Paoli I believe) and had his lisence suspended awhile back I believe. I have a copy of a bill he gave my in laws back in 1952 for care he gave my MIL when she gave birth to my BIL..His service was like $15, Hosp care was $25 and nursery care $15 !!
Kelley W. replied:
My Inlaws adored Dr Nathan Brown! Since there were 7 kids in the family, he would go to the house instead of them going to the office my MIL said..he treated them all at one time . She would say his bill was always either $15 or $25 ha ha...and his office nurse/recptionist stayed by his side for years..up until he retired. Its true about the insurance companies ruining GP's and private practices.. Imagine a Dr today like Dr Brown, Dr G, Dr Ciacci...they cared for pts from the womb to the grave. You would Never see that today !
