Vista Behavioral Health Associates has therapists, psychologists and psychiatrists. Would recommend giving them a call. Personally, I’ve found professionals I am comfortable with there and found that’s the biggest step in towards seeking help.

First, call your insurance and get three numbers to psychologists/therapists that specialize in depression. Then call and get them in. Dealing with insurance co.'s are a pain, so set aside some time. Also google and read reviews. I have no experience with meds. So depending on severity, i would get a referall to a psychiatrist.

Find some volunteer work, perhaps with helping children, homeless, or animals.

My advice would be to avoid drug prescriptions. Although they helped in some areas for me, they made some things a lot worse. I quit the prescription train because the negatives outweighed the positives. Now I take a lot of fish oil and exercise. Feel great. Everyone is different though. Thank you for sticking by and trying to help your SO through this. Human support helps more than any drug or supplement.

Visit old people that about to die in the hospital. Motivates to live.

Drugs DO play an important part in psychiatric treatment so don’t get on that train... they are life saving and often people can’t get better without them. Denying their usefulness denies mental illness exists. Please whatever help you find for your partner (I would suggest you research some psychiatrists you have access to as it took a long time to find the right one for my SO and the wrong one can be very scary) be open to whatever treatment they recommend

Something that has worked really well for me is exercise, more specifically jiu-Jitsu. I had tried medications but nothing has helped as much as being active. There are many jiu Jitsu schools in the Pittsburgh area and several offer the first lesson or 2 for free. If you would like more info feel free to DM me.

If your SO has insurance, tell them to go to their PCP and then talk to their insurance’s member services to see which mental health professionals are covered and what the associated costs are. If you can’t find a doctor or therapist via that, try PsychologyToday.com or SAMHSA.org. Both have search engines that allow you to search by zip, the type of service you’re looking for, and insurance type/sliding scale payments.

First thing you probably wanna do is have him talk to his PCP. They can give a referral an prescribe meds if necessary

I would recommend seeing a psychiatrist and going from there. Sometimes medication is necessary along with therapy, sometimes it’s not. Every person’s experience with depression is different. Unfortunately, sometimes it takes some time to try different things and see what works, but it’s worth it. I currently take nortriptyline for the chronic anxiety/depression I’ve had for over 8 years. This, along with therapy/healthy eating/exercise helped me pull myself together and I’m doing much better now. PM if you or your SO needs help finding a psychiatrist (mine is awesome) or if you have any questions!

Unfortunately it depends on your insurance. There are a lot of good psychologists in the area (I go to North Hills Psychological Serviceswww.nhpa.com) but if you are looking for a psychiatrist expect to be on the phone awhile. I called 21 psychiatrists before I found one who could help me. Most of the numbers from my insurance company were psychologists, not psychiatrists. Very infuriating. When my insurance changed I just started to pay her out of pocket so I don’t have to go through it all again.
