Check out blue knob auto. They have a site that is very easy to search. Yes, it is a hike to get there which may be a problem if you don't have a car to begin with, but if you can get there they have a great selection.

Check all the online places. Cars.com, etc. Used lots list on there, then you can get a feel for whats available.

I'd recommend a name brand dealership. You get mechanics with a full set of tools and diagnostic equipment, who're trained on that particular make of car, carefully going over it before they put it back out for sale. I got a 3 year old loaded Focus for $7 k at the Ford dealership in Washington. I drove that thing from 60 k to 180 k and replaced one wheel bearing.
