You don't want a Neurologist, you need a Rheumatologist. Dr Peter Johnson is in Penrith, Richmond and Dubbo. Good luck

I had my diagnosis confirmed by the pain clinic at Prince of Wales Hospital in Randwick...Hope this helps. The head of the pain clinic at St Vincents had failed to name my condition but did describe it as a "chronic pain condition" that he told me was caused by inappropriate nerve messages ... sounds like fibro... walks like fibro... looks like fibro ... but has no name!

A neurologist was the first to diagnose me here in Melbourne. Diagnosis was then confirmed at the Monash Fibro Clinic . Fibromyalgia is caused by a problem in the way the brain and the spinal cord process pain because the dorsal cells in the spinal cord become over active and send impulses up nerves after non painful events into pathways usually meant for pain messages. These impulses get to the brain using the pain pathways so the brain assumes they represent painful events. Your brain feels pain from things that shouldnt ordinarily feel painful.. Thanks to Dr Emma for explaining that to me a few months back.

There's one at the Angliss hospital in FTG and also one at Yarra Ranges Health in Lilydale. I went to the Lilydale one around 6 years ago. I think waiting lists are unfortunately around 6-8 months. Lots of demand and not enough clinics.

Hi Maree. I went to the Chronic Pain Management Service at Mornington (Peninsula Health )last year. It was an 8 week course that mainly focused on pacing and mindfullness. It was run by an O T, Psychologist and Physio. They also provided one on one sessions if needed and there was access to a doctor if you want to discuss meds. Wasn't very helpful for me because I found that focusing on my pain too much actually made me feel worse both physically and mentally . Each to their own I guess.

Contrary to what the public is being led to believe, there are natural, effective treatments for fibromyalgia (FM) and chronic pain. Functional and holistic medicine views and treats chronic health problems, including chronic pain, FM, autoimmunity, anxiety and depression, completely different than the conventional medical community. Functional medicine looks for and naturally addresses the underlying root causes behind chronic illnesses. These underlying root health issues include: toxicities, deficiencies, sensitivities, leaky gut/poor gut health, imbalances (thyroid, pituitary, adrenal, hormonal), physical and emotional trauma, genetic factors, infections, chronic systemic inflammation, system overloads, metabolic disorders, and poor coping skills. For the most part, all of these can be treated and managed naturally. The cornerstones of natural health management are clean diet, nutrition, supplements, good gut health, and other healthy, positive lifestyle changes. Natural management takes time, commitment, consistence and persistence, but it is well worth the effort. Drugs mask the underlying root triggers of FM while the root health problems, and the drugs continue to damage the body and take down more body systems (aka accompanying conditions).

Vicky thanks for the info I tried those patches in Greece back in 2009 and I was like a drunk all the time and this is coming from someone that takes 8 penadeine forte a day, also the pain seemed more concentrated didn't go away. I've been on only penadeine forte for 9 years they work quite well, except for breakthrough pain. Would you mind if I ask you who you see for the endo. Being new don't know the specialist here and I've been trying to get an appointment for the last six months with the ecca at the Freemasons Hospital. Any help would be much appreciated. Hope you have a better day tommorrow, you can inbox me if you like xxxooo

Oops sorry I used to live in Noble Park which is considered SE, now I live in Pearcedale I need to remember its not SE but more bayside-ish Lols. Hey Happy Easter for Sunday I am Greek also and will be celebrating too:-)) Kym, the clinic is called Eramosa Family Medical Clinic it's opposite the Fire Brigade (near centro) the Dr's name is Josh Honig. He is amazing!!!!!!! The clinic doesn't bulk bill but they put the rebate back on your card straight away I think you end up paying only $10 - $15 out of pocket. If you can't see Josh there are heaps and heaps of drs there and the ones I've seen have all been really good:-))) I hope that helps:-)))))

Hi just wondering if anyone has found the pain clinics helpful here in Melbourne as I have been referred to one in hope to get my pain under control....
Christa H. replied:
I went to one open minded and thinking they would give me access to physical treatments as well as their course but all they offered was their 3 week intensive course which they said was the only one proven to be the most effective. They also stated that they were going to contact my GP and strongly advise him to stop prescribing my pain meds which have worked well for the last 2 yrs whether or not I attended their course. They had a holier than thou attitude which irked me terribly and I ended up with a shocking flare up a few days later. There is an easy to read book called Pain Management 2013 version which they recommended I buy but I got it free from the library and found some info quite good but the rest I either knew or it did not relate. I tried to explain that pain is only a part of Fibro and it needs to be treated holistically as its fluid in nature and each part affects the other but they didn't want to know just kept repeating that I was going to find myself without meds and their help one day soon if I didn't book in for their amazing course, which amazingly is so good that there is only a handful of spots left for the year. I don't respond to veiled threats to well, least to say I did not book in for their amazing course and my GP has not stopped prescribing my pain meds. Pain Management clinics seem to differ in what they offer and you will only know if it works for you if you try. You can't go on others experiences really because clinics and we are all different.
