Try activategood.org , they list one time events where you can volunteer, so it's not a big commitment

Love Mutts Rescue holds adoption events every w/e and always needs dog walkers, cuddlers and having kids there is great as the dogs love to interact with kids and it helps adopters to see that they are good with kids. I have taken both of my kids and my daughter and I try to help every w/e.

Nursing homes. Residents love visitors. Make puppets and put on a puppet show, make non-bake cookies, play games (they usually already have checkers, UNO, etc.), color pictures, make Valentines, pass around a ballon without it hitting the ground, etc. Most have an activities director who can help you plan something or jump in an activity already going on. I personally recommend Franklin Manor in Youngsville just past Century Link.

Franklinton UMC has a soup kitchen. You might want to call there and see if you can volunteer.

Adrienne, you should check with Tri Area Ministry . When I used to take food over there a few years ago Lewis always said that they needed help. It would be during the day though.
I know about the obvious SPCA/Humane society etc, but does anyone have ties with a local animal shelter/adoption agency that has a drop-off point for dog/cat food in...

There's Second Chance and Safe haven for Cats (Though not close to downtown). If you don't mind a little extra "hassle" though, I recommend Goathouse Refuge in Pittsboro. While further out, Moej does a trip there every Sunday to volunteer and those peo ple do great work (I've volunteered from time to time). TYhey work with Rescue Groups here, when I went through that fiasco with Wake County Animal Control to try and rescue a cat from their shelter, Goathouse tried to help and volunteer (Wake County preferred to put it down and lie to my entire family). They have well over 200 cats, with their own outdoor freeroaming area, it's No-Kill and they handle overflow from centers up and down the East Coast. He'll get your donations there or you can donate money you'd put towards a can of food directly to them. Check 'em out: https://www.facebook.com/TheGoathouseRefuge?fref=ts

Found a kitty in our yard. No collar. Please let me know if it's yours. And if you have contact for animal shelter to pick him up. We have a newborn so can't take him in
Joella C. replied:
Maria Nichols, I shared your post to Willow Glen Animal Neighbors. In the AM, you can call animal services dispatch at 408.794.7222 to schedule a pick-up by an officer. (It might be later in the day because they get a lot of calls.) They will scan for a microchip, and with any luck he'll have one and can be reunited quickly.
