It's illegal for an inspection station to pass a vehicle that they know should fail. They can lose their license, at a minimum.

Your best bet is to go to one of the tint shops that runs a special on removal/reapply after inspection.

Good luck, a mechanic shop can lose their license for passing a car when it shouldn't. Not a risk many places will take.
Your best bet is to call a tint shop, have them remove the tint, get it inspected then reapply it if you desire. A lot of shops will cut you a deal if you tell them about it.
Then again effective Jan 1st - Section 375 (12-a):

I don't know the actual fines but I heard it's somewhere around $75/window plus surcharges. And with Cuomo needing money to fund his free college experiment expect the Troopers to be told to crack down on it.
