Go to www.goldenempirecouncil.org and click on WoHeLo Family Camp. The dates are July 24-26 and include a day program option July 25, an overnight option July 25-26 and a weekend option July 24-26. A downloadable brochure, fees, and online registration will be available after early March. You can also search facebook for the WoHeLo Family Camp page for lots of pictures and comments. I really like Adventure Mountain, right off Hwy 50 at Echo Summit past Sierra at Tahoe. Small sign, but easy to find otherwise. They offer 6-10 groomed sledding runs of different difficulty. Otherwise, the hills are very simple and surrounded by pretty forest. You walk your sled or saucer to the top; no electronic "carpet" devices or rope tows. Nice warm lodge to warm up in, grab a snack, or use the facilities. Best thing to me is: One price for an entire car full of people (I think it's around $14?), and no time limit. It's recommended to get there by mid-morning on weekends because they do fill up often by noon. Granlibakken is also wonderful -- a nice wide hill that allowed our saucers to fly down with 3 year old in our laps. Note: Not all sledding places allow children to double up in a sled or sit on lap of parents. We nixed those options in the past couple of years due to young age of our child. Beyond those two places, we want to stay over night somewhere closer and try Soda Springs sometime. Sounds like a full day extravaganza, since for $34, your kid can try tubing, skiiing, snowboarding, and sledding. If you have a higher clearance vehicle - try Warm Springs Canyon - There is an area of aeolian deposit near the beginning of the road (sand across the road) that is somewhat deep in areas but the rest of the road is in good condition. It's off of the southern end of Badwater Road and goes back to old Talc mines - there are flowers blooming at various elevations. Do pick up a AAA Death Valley map before you go and check the "Daily Report" and "Wildflower Report" on DVNP's website here: http://www.nps.gov/deva/index.htm

Death Valley has a surprising amount of water - most of it underground.

I was in DEVA three weeks ago and camped at Mesquite Campground not far from Ubehebe Crater. It wasn't very crowded, but I was there mid week. I did have to make a gas/supply run to Furnace Creek one day (51 miles each way), but on the way back I hiked up Titus Canyon (no flowers up there, but cool geology). I did still come across plenty of wildflowers even though I stayed mainly in the northern end of the park. Have a great time. I'm sure it'll be great regardless of where you choose to explore. My daughter and son-in-law live in Angels camp. Dan is a captain with CalFire. They are under mandatory evacuation but holding tight for now. They live on the east side of Hwy 49...and WorldMark is on the west side. WorldMark has opened their doors to our fire crews to get their rest! They are housing them 4 to a room and it is WONDERFUL! Angels Camp is a great community and the people are helping each other out. So far the fire has not reached Angels but they are prepared.

Closest would probably be the West Sac RV park which has a handful of tent sites. Don't camp along the river in Sacramento as it's not only illegal, but dangerous.

You're in grad school. Are you a member of Couchsurfing? Someone there would more than likely host your or give you a yard to sleep in. I'd do it, but I'm not in a position to right now.

Where are you coming from? And where are you going to? There are probably a few places in the foothills just outside of Sac that might work for you

Camp ReCreation and camp Lotsa Fun. Both take place at Camp Ronald McDonald at Eagle Lakes and run bus service at least one way from Sacto. My son attends both and loves his camp weeks.
