Looking for vet, preferably at least somewhat holistic, to help my dachshund rescue, Baxter. He has scaly dry skin and almost no fur... we thought it was from extreme...

I am so sorry you "fur baby" is sick. My dog Buddy Winters has special needs too and has been a patient at Rehoboth Beach Animal Hospital for 5 years....His vet is Dr. Casey. Good Luck !

We use Haven Lake for our little doxie and in particular Dr. Audrey Adkins. We love how careful she is in medicating Shotzie, who reacts to so many meds. Dachshunds are known to be hypersensitive to many medications, so we understand your fear in medicating your little guy. Our Doxie was losing the hair on her ears and Dr. Adkins was able to clear that up. Hope you can find something that helps Baxter.
Becky S. replied:
Absolutely, Suzanne is right about that. Coconut oil is primarily a maintenance supplement - definitely see a vet.:)
April H. replied:
Dr. Christina Abramowicz. She is holistic and I believe she will come to your home... She is on Facebook. Best of luck
Carol P. replied:
I have heard great things about coconut oil. My cousin Susan Hudson is an awesome vet. She is at Salisbury animal hospital.
Libby S. replied:
Dr Christina Abramowicz. Look on FB. I've got a good feeling for her. Dr Martin SAH.

Our dear pup doggies (all 4.5 yrs old) are on Merrick Grain Free dry with organic, boneless skinless chicken breast (a bit) on top of the dry food. Like Teri, we have loved coconut oil for cooking, pulling, and more for many years. I rubbed some melted (not hot) on Baxter tonight and he loved it. So we'll continue that routine while we progress in diagnosis. For now the tiny guy is resting with smooth skin that "feels" like it feels better (to me), but of course it is just topical. I intend to pick up the EFA quality, organic oil too - for all 3 pups - I ran out but know it is important for their diet. And pursue an appt with a great vet. I'm looking up Dr. Christina Abramowicz tonight. Sleep well all - and thanks again. I'm learning some great things from all of you.

Teri A. replied:
Take this seriously. Try virgin all natural coconut oil. My baby had severe allergies and hot spots. It worked like a charm Rub in your hand then rub all over him. it doesn't matter if he licks it as it is good for them to ingest it also. Savannah is who we swear by Dr. Reicter & Dr Pedigo (owners)@Savannah animal hospital in Lewes. Good luck for your poor little guy. Look up coconut oil for pets.
Becky S. replied:
Definitely the coconut oil but orally and only cold pressed organic food grade. Start off slow adding to food, like just a 1/4 teaspoon and increase gradually. I have 4 dogs, all adopted and with various types of fur/skin and they all thrive on it. I buy it in 5 gal. buckets. And as Teri said, Savannah Animal Hospital is your best bet. It could be something like thyroid issues, which will take medication, or dermamite infestation, which needs treating. But for long term health, check out the web on benefits for dogs on coconut oil. It is a great super food.
Sheltie friends: Can you recommend a good vet in the Hampton, Newport News, or Yorktown area? A family with one of my puppies is looking. You know, one who gets Shelties.
Diane S. replied:
Ask Mary Kimball. She has several very good sheltie friends in that area
