Bike Shops in San Francisco, CA

REI isn't half-bad about taking care of people who don't want to spandex themselves up and race for a reasonable amount of money. Less 'tude, usually. You might want to check out Sports Basement. It is to REI as Trader Joe's is to Whole Foods. Calmar Cycles is decent, if you want to go to a bikes-only store near Cupertino.

I bought my Trek 7.3 fx at Hyland Family Bikes in San Jose. I like those guys a lot.

If you're in Cupertino check out Cupertino Bike Shop. They've moved since I've last been in but they're now on Foothill near McClellan. I have 3 shops I tend to frequent most, Tread on Winchester in Campbell, Trailhead @ Camden & Union and Sports Basement. All 3 have bikes available to demo. I would still continue to look on Craigslist honestly though. Be patient and watch regularly until you find what you want in the right price range. You'll get more for your money with a used bike. One thing I would recommend if you get a used bike is to have a shop do a tune-up on the bike for you. They can clean and check everything to make sure it's all in good working order and let you know if anything needs replacing. Edit: One extra question - What kind of riding are you going to be doing? I ask this because if you're just doing flatland commuting you could also consider get a single speed bike.

+1 for Calmar, I bought my trek 7.2 there, the staff were super friendly and helped pick out useful accessories. I was supposed to bring it back after a few months of riding and they were going to wind tunnel test me & adjust the bike for me further. but it got stolen before I could :(

I had good experience with [Summit Bicycles](http://www.summitbicycles.com/) off El Camino in Santa Clara. They are a Trek dealer so you might find some last-year's model discounts.

Shops I know that should be able to help you out include Wheel-Away Cycle Center (on Hamilton in Campbell), The Off-Ramp (El Camino at San Tomas Expy in Santa Clara), or Mike's Bikes (multiple locations). But for a hybrid, even though I don't know these shops, you might want to head over to the Stanford Campus. There's several bike shops along El Camino there and I'd guess they sell a lot of hybrids.

Calmar Cycles on El Camino in Santa Clara is great. Very knowledgeable guys and they ride a lot ;)

1. La Dolce Velo on the Alameda in San Jose. I just bought a bike from there a few months ago. The service was great and they fitted the bike to me perfectly. 2. Hylands on Meridian ave in San jose. Its an awesome family bike shop that's always super helpful.

I've had my bike serviced [here](http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-bicycle-outfitter-los-altos) and they seemed to do a good job. I wouldn't think they're particularly cheap but my impression is they know what they're talking about.

Look for Insight 1 at Performance cycle. I bought mine for $350 + tax. They also have 10% back which can be used towards other things. (Sometimes they have an offer for 20-30% back). Plus they have lifetime adjustments free.

[Hope Services](http://www.hopeservices.org/our-businesses/bicycle-shop/) is a charity that receives donated bikes, fixes them up, and sells them to the public, usually for less than $100. They have a huge selection of bikes, and if they don't have a hybrid in now, you can ask them to call you when they get one in. It's not really a business with normal business hours, so you should either email or call them at 408-562-1836 to get information on any hybrid bikes they might have.

Perhaps the coolest bike shop you will ever visit is Rivendell in Walnut Creek. They'll let you borrow a bike to test ride on Mt Diablo all afternoon, and they specialize in lifestyle bikes (as opposed to racing bikes). They design all the bikes they sell, and they also carry bike camping supplies. (Their newest storefront is called Rivendell Bike Book and Hatchet.) Absolutely worth the trip for bike nerds.

[Pacific Bicycles](http://pacbikes.com/) for your racing needs. You can even rent bikes for riding, test ride, etc. My impression from everyone there is a bunch of old bike messengers. Not bad guys at all. [Box Dog Bikes](http://boxdogbikes-3.myshopify.com/) hooked me up, and are just a friendly little shop. They focus more on cyclocross and touring, with some encouragement of bicycle camping as well. Not a wide selection, but the staff are all solid and friendly. [Mission Bicycle](https://www.missionbicycle.com/) is a small custom shop. They follow the Timbuk2 manner of custom, meaning you get a wide selection of colors, etc, but a base pattern to build off of, with various upgrades.

Oh boy, you are in luck! Take Bart to The Mission. There's so much bike stuff to see there, all on like 1 mile of Valencia street with fantastic food, bars and bike lanes. * Valencia Cyclery: it's a mostly Specialized shop. They also carry Surly. plenty of nice race, cyclocross and mountain bikes to test ride. They have a repair shop next door that's pretty well stocked. Fantastic selection of cycling caps and some nice California-themed jerseys. * Freewheel: Giant, Bianchi and others. I just picked up a Bianchi steel-framed road bike from here. Maybe a bit higher-end than Valencia? Lots of their parts are on display in glass cases if you want to window-shop for shifters or something. * Mission Bicycles: Custom-made singlespeed, fixed and internal hub bikes. Bike accessories I haven't seen anywhere else. A bit expensive for bikes that can barely climb hills but they are super pretty. * Chrome store: Some of the best and most popular messenger bags, urban cycling clothes and shoes. * Mission Workshop: Chrome's competitor. I know this store is in the area but I haven't bothered to check it out yet. Their products look great and I hear good things about the store. Also, there's always a ton of cyclists biking around there. It's just as interesting to see what's riding down the street as it is to see what you can find in the shops.

American Cyclery on Stanyan? The Rapha store on Filbert and Filmore? (not really a shop per se, but a cafe and the staff is really nice and they have some art bike installations up usually)

What happens if you just unplug your two brake cables and one gear sensor, does it work? Then plug one in at a time until it shows an error. That sounds like less than a minute to possibly troubleshoot the problem you think you have. If you find the one that causes the error, then it's just a replacement part.
