We love Eden Pet Hospital in Castro Valley (1920 Knox Rd, near the intersection of Grove Way and Redwood Rd). For after-hours emergencies, we've had great experiences at Sage in Dublin (by TriValley Animal Rescue). We had a bad experience with the one on Washington in San Leandro.

I've been going to the same vet for over 30 years (Dr. Halbach in SLZ) so I trust him, but I'll give the bully sticks a try.
Joanna H. replied:
Dr. Halbach recommends a big rawhide with the knot at the ends. Let them chew on it for 1/2 hour UNDER supervision. This will help with getting rid of plaque on the back molars. Deer antlers & chew hooves can crack the teeth.
Laura R. replied:
I just picked up a bag of hides made in the USA at Pet Express in Castro Valley, by Lucky across from Safeway. The staff there is quite passionate and knowledgeable as well. They offer similar varieties depending on your dog's diet. Ours is on a grain-free diet, so we don't give him the alternatives. We stick with rawhide, keep him supervised, but then take it away before he swallows it.

I've used San Lorenzo Vet for many years and have always liked them. When I had to put a dog down a couple of years ago, the Doctor & staff were so kind that you would have thought my dog belonged to them. One cried right along with me. I knew then that I had been right to take my pets there all along.

San Lorenzo Vet Hospital on Hesperian next to Jack in the Box. Dr Hallbach is great. It's a one Vet shop. He never rushes you, he takes his time, he'll answer every single question you have. He's up to date on the latest and greatest, but he also says things like, "Well, it's expensive and we haven't seen much help from it. I leave it up to you if you want to try it or not. We have a 12 year old Lab that has been going to Dr Hallbach since he was a pup. He knows our animals. You don't have to go over everything from the start with whichever vet is available that day.

We love San Lorenzo Vet and Dr Halbach (next to Jack in the Box on Hesperian). We like that it's a one person vet, so you see only one vet and he gets to know you and your pet. He takes all the time you need, and will answer any questions you have.

We go to the SPCA veterinary clinic in Oakland. LOVE THEM! On our last visit our dog decided she was shy and the vet sat down on the floor and ignored her and asked me questions. In less than 5 minutes our dog was on his lap trying to get his attention. The vet was great! He knew exactly how to handle a shy dog. We've like all the vets we've seen there but he was our favorite!
