David Berlant and I both take our dogs to Dr. George Marmalejo at Chabot Veterinary in Castro Valley. It's a bit of a trek but he and the other vets are all great there. We've been going there for years.

The best & most compassionate vet I've ever known (got her several years ago for my cat, but now she's vet for Carma The Wonder Dog wink emoticon ) is Dr. Anne Reedhttp://www.holisticpetvet.net/www.../Home.html - her practice used to be all house calls but then she got an office right next to the freeway ramp in Pt. Richmond (very easy to get to). Housecalls Tues., Wed. & Fri., office Mon. & Thurs. She's trained in vet. acupuncture, homeopathy, herbalism, etc. Has 2-3 month waiting list, so I suggest to just get on the list now for when a spot opens, and meanwhile stop by the office to meet her sometime..
Lauri T. replied:
PS. I've used VCA at Shattuck & 45 th too, for an emergency, but the best place VCA (& Dr. Reed) ended up referring me to (when Carma got a foxtail embedded in paw frown emoticon ) PETS Referral Center on Univ. near San Pablo. They were fantastic and so kind, Keep their info nearby if you ever need help evenings, weekends, holidays. http://petsreferralcenter.com

One recommendation I love to give is Dr. Stacey Holz at Four Seasons Animal Hospital in Lafayette ( http://fourseasonsah.com/ ) She is an excellent Veterinary Dermatologist. They are expensive, but very thorough/efficient.
Does anyone have good recommendations on where I can go to bring my little baby girl in for her Spay surgery in the East Bay?
My vet just gave me the estimate for her...

Wow, that's super high! My vet in Milpitas (Dr. Tama at Tama Veterinary Hospital) was about $300-$350 I believe.

Karisu W. replied:
That cost quote seems excessive for a routine spay. At Adobe Animal Hospital in Los Altos (South Bay) a spay is normally a bit over $350, and Adobe is a premium animal hospital.
Xochi E. replied:
That's pretty high. The Humane Society in Milpitas charges under $100.
Steve H. replied:
Our vet Dr Gill at Haymont clinic on mission Blvd Hayward was brilliant. (Bonus he loves Corgi's) he did Nutmegs spay for less than $200 if I remember correctly
Mo B. replied:
We paid $163 at Kirkwood Animal Hospital in Campbell to spay Geena last month. We passed on the cone of shame and the pain pills as we got a soft cone for her from Petco and the pain pills we already had if she needed them. As far as we can tell, (family and friends who are doctors and nurses), they did a great job. Of course we wanted the best care possible but we also recognize that paying more does not necessarily equate to better care. Check out: http://www.checkbook.org/reviews/ca/alameda/veterinarians/ A copy of the magazine with the vet reviews may be available at your local library.

Laura N. replied:

Benicia Animal Clinic, in Benicia...Dr. Laurie takes care of my 3 Corgis, Rosie, Shani & Riley.
Winnie D. replied:
We use Montclair Vet. Ask for Dr. Gary Richter:)
Winnie D. replied:
We recently moved and we did an extensive research with local vets. Another reason why we prefer Montclair Vet because they have alternative care and extensive knowledge that helps our corgs stay healthy and strong when they reach an old age. Their sister location is Holistic Vet Care in Piedmont. (Any doctor is fine, except we prefer Dr. Richter.)
Eric H. replied:
We take Nia to Montclair Veterinary Hospital in Oakland - several excellent vets there.
Brian S. replied:
I take Charlie to Bishop Ranch as well. Out veterinarian is Dr. James Pogrel.

Love Dr. Maryanne Woolley at Providence Vet in Alameda...and she's had corgis herself:)

Hey ya'all I'm looking for a new veterinarian for my dog and cat in Berkeley. Any and all suggestions welcome. Thanks!
Kristen B. replied:
We like Campus Vet too.
Robert H. replied:
I go to Campus Veterinary Clinic (1807 MLK Way in Berkeley), just down the road from YK. They are very nice. Dr. Margo Reid is very cool and looks like Ellen.
Jennifer G. replied:
Did you call Dr Grant?
Chrissy G. replied:
I have been going to Montclair Vet. but its really expensive, and kind of a drive. Thanks for all the recommendations friends! Jennifer Graham, I didn't because I need a vet to X-Ray Sandy's heart because of her heart murmur. Not sure he comes to your house with an x-ray machine?

This is Oakland - but I absolutely love Dr. Kim at the VCA - she will take care of you too when your furbabes are not doing so well. When my kitty was sick recently she did research on experimental procedures to help her. She goes the extra mile and then some. She will also rec alternative therapies.

I'm not a big fan of VCA. I go to Claremont Pet Hospital in Rockridge and have always had great experiences. I don't have a dog but there are often large dogs in the waiting room.
Kathryn P. replied:
Creature Comforts on MacArthur is fabulous. Dr. Jenny is world famous. The other cool thing about them is they have noninvasive treatments and use a form of laser therapy for joints and inflammation that replaces surgery in many cases. I’ve been going to them for ten years and love them. Dr. Ashley is wonderful, too.
Junko B. replied:
Dr. Phil Villard at SPCA Fillmore street. 1(415) 563-6700 They are open 24/7. He has two large dogs and some cats himself. We really trust him. Good luck Hope you dog feels good soon
Andrea Z. replied:
I go to Claremont Hospital in Rockridge with my tiny (68 lb) pitbull and am quite happy. That said, Davis has been recommended to me for any of her more significant needs (her knees).
Diana S. replied:
We use Claremont Vet Hospital for our lab/dane mix (though he is "only" 100 lbs and doesn't have any large breed-specific issues). We first came to them some years back for a second opinion thinking our dog had a torn CCL, and I appreciated their clarity in explaining everything and the transparency of their surgery pricing. They also happily (and correctly!) diagnosed it as something different and far less costly.

Hi Lake neighbor friends; anyone have a vet recommendation in town? Also looking for a place with knowledgable staff for good running shoes in town. Thank you!

I like our vet, Grand Lake Vet. Not to be confused with the other vet clinic that also happens to be down the street. They are very nice, very fast with test results and medication refill (I’ve called in my cat’s prescription and picked it up 20 min later). They are not cheap if you have an older animal that needs lots of treatment but are any vets/in the Bay? They don’t try to up sell you on unnecessary tests or treatment. I’ve called them and gotten free advice for minor issues over the phone. Only downside is it’s very annoying to find parking by the clinic.
iliketodrawcats replied:
East Bay SPCA has a good value. For a regular vet, I am happy with the folks at Broadway Pet Hospital. Their staff and vets are competent and they have a LOT of available hours (which is good for working people and great if you want to avoid emergency room costs). They have a really nice facility that is relatively new and can do a lot there on site.
babycarrotsandpeas replied:
I second the East Bay SPCA for spay/neuter. They do it all day every day, so they've got it down. Vet-wise, I absolutely love Alameda Pet Hospital on Buena Vista near the Park Street bridge. All the doctors are great, and they're always wonderfully cost conscious.

Not a cat person. But I adopted my german shepherd from the Oakland pound. East Bay SPCA does their spay and neuter. They did my girl's spay. No issues, very clean. Spay for a cat is $100 per their website. I go nto VCA because it's a walk away for me. Their vets seem very nice
suaveagave replied:
I got my cat spayed at East Bay SPCA and I have no complaints. One issue might be that it appointments are booked a long ways out, and you have to put a down payment on the procedure over the phone when you schedule (it’s not a big amount), so be prepared not to flake the day of.
