Katie D. replied:
I love dr Evans at Soquel vet (next to harbor high and they have a grooming place next door). He's been in our family as a vet for 40 yrs (831) 475-0432
Valerie N. replied:
Mountain Vet in Ben Lomond is very affordable
McKenzie K. replied:
Don't know about affordable, but I take my dog to Harbor Vet. Kerrin Hoban. I have been happy with her.

My friends dog has ongoing demodectic mange. She swears by this recipe ( better than stuff you get at the vet) http://www.earthclinic.com/pets/dog_mange_cure.html
Cassandra P. replied:
I love Santa Cruz Vet... http://www.santacruzveterinaryhospital.com/ they are super good, love you and your pet and take great care of you.
Gemma L. replied:
I like Dr. Gary at Mountain Feed (mountain vet) for affordable. I bathe my dog all the time so he rarely has fleas. But when he does I switch between frontline and advantage alternatting every so often
Janette M. replied:
I love Dr Clay at Chanticleer Vet Hospital
Jaimie C. replied:
If it is fleas in the house, diatomaceous earth will kill them when dusted in the carpets and on his bed, a great alternative to pesticides. Inexpensive too! Tractor Supply carries it.

Supposedly this place deals with birds: http://www.animalcarevet.net/, as does http://www.coffeevethospital.com/. They both are about 20 miles away from Shelbyville.

Dr. Paula LaHue, Del Mar Vet Hosp. in Aptos. I will never forget her extreme kindness/compassion and thoroughness during my Pablo's very lengthy illness. I would ask for her specifically, don't know the other vets in that office. Her husband, Dr. LaHue at Santa Cruz Vet Hosp. is also amazing. I found Del Mar Vet to be reasonably priced.
Best Vet in SC? I have a small, 'senior' dog who has had some issues over the years, but is still doing pretty well with regular check-ups and tests. His current vet has...

Always had great experiences with Soquel Animal Hospital. Nice vets, nice staff, not too pushy on stuff, and they always give a follow up call to visits which is a nice touch even if I don't answer the calls half the time:P
soquel creek vet hospital runs a $25 diagnostic coupon in the good times every other week or so, keep an eye open for it to save some money on the visit. Great for checkups or if you think something is wrong. Tests are extra.. The normal visit is $50...

Harbor Vet is amazing, all 3 vets there are great and it's reasonably priced. If you need more serious care, Pacific Veterinary Specialists has everything from surgeons to internists. I've interacted with most of the people there, vets and techs (I worked at a ranch that had many small animals and an owner that didn't skimp on end of life care, *and* I have a special-needs dog) Pac Vet is incredible. They're a little pricier because their vets are all specialists, but the quality of care is unbeatable and they will try to keep the price down/avoid unnecessary expenses. This is also random and may never come in handy, but Opthalmology for Animals in Aptos is another amazing vet (eye specialist). Dr. Gratzek actually diagnosed my (aforementioned special-needs) dog with an incredibly rare presentation of a constellation of auto-immune diseases. And the vet techs there are very kind. My dog hated being in the kennel after his operation so they just let him hang out with them in the office.

I like west side animal hospital. Really nice. Lived in Santa Cruz my whole life and have not found a vet that does not try to milk. The only guy that doesn’t probably would not be a good vet for an older dog. Good luck!

The other commenter hit the nail on the head. There are none that wont milk you for all it’s worth. They’re great vets but man... you’d think they saw a blank check when I walk in that door. Like a mechanic. “Hey I want get these growths checked.” “For sure, we can run those tests. No problem. But what we’re really looking at is how bad her teeth are. You know the thing she hasn’t had any problems with? Here’s an estimate for $1500 worth of dental work.”
That’s barely an embellishment, btw. My advice? Find a vet in San Jose. I’ll ask my wife’s parents who they go to. I remember them being extremely pleased in both price and care provided for their elder chihuahua.
Or dress up like a homeless person. I’m convinced there is two different price scales at vets. Those that can pay, and those that can’t.

Tammy Abraham at Harbor Vet. I worked with her for many years and she is a great colleague of my husband's. If you have an emergency, then I obviously recommend my husband (he is at Pacific). Not just because he is awesome at what he does, but because we own a French Bulldog so he knows the breed. Be prepared before you get one. I recommend you get pet insurance.
