Anybody remember a pretty decent furniture store in Tampa, Babcock, on North Franklin St. in the skid row section. There was also a health food store nearby, Berta...
Dan P. replied:
Tony, I remember Babcock furniture exactly where you describe it. It was a rather run down area. But I think they were there for many years, starting from when the area was a thriving area of town. Back in the early 80 s, when I worked downtown in what was then the Exchange Bank tower at 610 N. Fla. Ave., I couldn't afford to park in the building parking garage, so I parked way up at the end of Franklin St. near Babcock. The parking meters there were 25 cents for 3 hours, just south of the Park Trammell state building. I don't remember Berta's, but could that be Bertha's instead? There used to be a "Bertha's Nutrition Shop" next to Wrights Gourmet House when they were on Neptune on the west side of Dale Mabry. Maybe the same owner?
Dan P. replied:
Here you go, it is the same person, Bertha Layton. This is a 1992 St. Pete Times article: Layton, 76, owns the company that has been selling vitamins and health foods in Tampa since 1951, when his wife, Bertha Layton, opened it downtown. The shop moved 15 years ago to its present location, at the intersection of Neptune Street and S Dale Mabry Highway. Bertha's began expanding last year after the arrival of Mike McNiff, who is the son of Layton's cousin from Texas. Layton had been after McNiff for years to move here and help out. After all, Bertha's has always been a family operation. The Laytons' daughter, Helen Diamond, works there, and it's the only job she's ever had.See http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/tampabay/access/54253204.html?dids=54253204:54253204&FMT=ABS&FMTS=ABS:FT&type=current&date=Jun+27%252C+1992&author=PAUL+HANSON&pub=St.+Petersburg+Times&desc=Success+grows+naturally+at+Bertha's+Series%253A+NEIGHBORHOOD+SHOPS&pqatl=google

There are 2 in Sarasota. The one I was thinking of is Millers Dutch Haus Furniture and there is also Dutchcrafters.

Southern Hospitality in Plant City might. My sil was given one from Cracker Barrel. It's very sturdy, but turned out to be very uncomfortable for long periods of rocking.

Tampa peeps, any recommendations for second-hand furniture stores or something like that? Looking for an old wooden bench.
Courtney P. replied:
Summer House on Manhattan has nice stuff, not sure if it is second hand or just shabby chic. I love Missing Piece, too, but most of it tends to be more formal.
Lisa B. replied:
Try Triage. I love Missing Piece but it is not typically that stylel. Also, roll around Florida Ave…near Bird Street…all kinds of stuff along there too.

Rooms to Go has their outlet in Thonotosassa if you can do pick-up. The warehouse will have slightly scuffed stuff for pretty cheap.

I've shopped around a lot of different places in Tampa from Restoration Hardware to the dirtiest thrift stores. The best place is Rooms To Go. Its the right balance of price and quality, at least in my opinion.
Cal00 replied:
I've bought from Rooms to Go, American Signature, Kane's, Pottery Barn, Z Gallerie, IKEA and Ashley. Rooms to go is the worst in terms of quality. Avoid altogether. You get what you pay for with IKEA. Their stuff isn't the best quality but you can get a side table for $7 for christ's sake. However, if you need accessories like wall mirrors or bowls for the kitchen, definitely check out IKEA. American Signature & Kanes are decent with American Signature being more modern styles. Pottery Barn is better quality, attractive, but expensive. Same with ZG Ashley has solidly built, affordable pieces. I have never gone wrong there.
