Looking for recs for a very good (but affordable) accountant to do US taxes, after having some complicated issues over the last few years. Thanks!

Yaacov Jacob! He does my FBAR and taxes and is absolutely great

I also have used hrblock.com in the past, and I was pleased with it. When I first went looking for an online service, it was the first to allow me to open an account with a non-US address. However, for the last few years, I had to print out the return and mail it in, presumably because I had neither any tax liability or a refund due to me. Nonetheless, for 2014, I used Ofer Bar-Gev's office, and, while not cheap by any stretch of the imagination, was worth it to me. http://www.bargev.com/

I used H&R Block last year. I thought I was happy with it, until the irs didn't accept my refund. Why? Pretty simple, but I didn't know it. I filled out the foreign exclusion form, which also excludes you from getting the child tax credit. I got an accountant to do the amended form and this year's return, hoping I can do it myself next year.
Tali G. replied:
i used the free taxact.com. we owed a bit after the child tax credit, and the IRS seemed okay with it. as it was our first time using the credit and not the exclusion, i paid $40 for audit protection.

I also used Yaacov Jacob. He was amazing! He takes care of everything.

Devorah Saban. She's really good. PM me for her number

Rachel Day - there are some nuances to filing as an expat/overseas citizen. A reasonable plan for do-it-yourself is to have a professional provide service one year, then do it yourself the next. Come back to your accountant every 3 rd year or so to make sure that you are on track. As a general rule, we do encourage our clients to update their own FBAR. xptrs.com

Hi, I've been living in Israel for almost 8 years and I've never filed American taxes. Can anyone recommend a Tel Aviv accountant that specializes in American taxes...
Elana S. replied:
Funny, I've also had an accountant disappear on me... I can recommend someone in Jeru that you will probably never have to travel to meet. Rather, everything can be done over email/fax/phone: Ely Cole ely@xptrs.com.

When I was in the same situation, I used Nosson Buchsbaum. buchsbaumtax@gmail.com. He filed whatever needed to be filed. Not 100% sure where he's based because we did everything by phone & e-mail. He was pleasant to work with and charged about 800-900 nis (can't remember exactly). Since then, btw, I've filed on my own using turbo-tax. Good luck!

YJE and Co Pardessia. (Yud Gimel Etzion) Good prices and great service
Tamar W. replied:
You don't need a TLV accountant - I do everything via phone and email with my accountant. I recommend Ariel Rosenthal arielrosenthalcpa@gmail.com or Chaim Korn taxusa.israel@gmail.com. Both are reasonably priced, very efficient and a pleasure to work with.
I am urgently looking for a tax accountant (preferably in the Hod Hasharon / Kfar Saba / Ra'anana area) who is well versed in both US and Israeli tax law. If anyone can...
Sol K. replied:
Exempt income and related assets do not need to be reported to the Israel Tax Authority for the entire 10 years. All types of income and capital gains are covered by the exemption if they are derived from non-Israeli sources, such as income from salary, business, pensions, investments, etc.
Binyamin R. replied:
Let's get a few things clear. The Voluntary Disclosure scheme gives NO reduction in taxes due or interest, inflation and fines for late filing and payment. What it does give, and this is not a small thing, is immunity from prosecution - since, ultimately, not reporting income and paying taxes is a criminal offence. Leora - the scheme not applying where the tax due is small (and no-one knows what that means) does NOT mean that the tax shouldn't be paid. Rather, they don't start checking eligibility to immunity since they're not going to prosecute. Sol - don't necessarily take everything that NBN says as gospel truth. The 10-year exemption applies only to olim who came in 2007 or later; those who came before are liable in full to Israeli taxes on their overseas income. Further, the definition of work income is not well understood by people; and many people who are working physically in israel for a foreign employer are INCORRECTLY treating this as foreign-earned income.
Binyamin R. replied:
one final point (that may be relevant to OP) is that the terms of any Double Tax Treaty with another country must be looked at. You may have paid taxes to Uncle Sam, but if Israel had the first right, it's money down the drain

We used Yaacov Jacob and he was great!
