Rustic? Not really. Croatian National Forest is the closest and it isn’t close. Medic Mountain State Park is relatively close but not rustic.

Check out Medoc Mountain State Park. It is probably your best option. TBH, there aren't a lot of good places to camp along 95 in NC like you are wanting too.

Try using campendium. It's not really meant for off-grid type camping, but you should be able to find a decent state/national or other campground with minimal expense. Also, you might be able to find something decent on [boondockerswelcome.com](https://boondockerswelcome.com) \- which is people that will let you camp on their land for free.

95 is rather agrarian. Not much in the way of forests, hills, lakes or any *interesting* terrain. There might be a couple of KOAs off the side of the highway, but I wouldn’t call it charming.

What is that weird place on I 95 that you see right after you cross the SC/NC line? You see about 100 billboards for it before you get there and the place is huge,,,but always looks empty. I think it’s called the Border or something like that. Y’all need to check it out because somethings going on there.
