I can't figure out what page would be the best to ask this question on. So I'll start here and see where it takes me.
Where is the best place online to purchase linen?...
Rachel M. replied:
David L. replied:
As has been said, depends on where you live. SOMETIMES, and not very often, but sometimes... your local fabric store.... if you kiss up to them.... if they really like you. However, for dependable, consistent quality linen at an affordable price fabrics-store.com But, it can't hurt to talk to your local fabric store. I have gotten some good deals locally myself, but the usual disclaimers apply - individual mileage may vary........

It depends on the weight of the linen. If you need heavy weight linen, like 9 oz Irish linen for making something that will pass a punch test, Michael Levine http://www.lowpricefabric.com is the place to go. They even ship to Oertha in two days. I have been buying fabric from them for well over 20 years.

I've used fabrics-store.com. I only buy the white and try to catch it on sale, then I dye it the color I want. If you want to check out the fabric (I have a couple different weights) then I guess you and Bal will have to come visit us

Fabrics-store.com. Decent linen, great selection, reasonable prices.
Susan H. replied:
I have a lot of linen from fabrics-store.com. It's OK. But the best place really depends on how much of what quality you want. I once needed 15+ yards of white and bought wonderful stuff from Ulster Linen which was more costly but much better than anything fs sells. I've also gotten some amazing linen on ebay and a bolt from Denver Fabrics that's lighter than the medium weight from fs but sturdier than their lightweight.

Depends on where you live. I bought stuff from fabrics-store.com and been very happy with it but I've also found fabulous deals on linen in the downtown L.A. fashion district.
In my various sewing endeavors (from cosplay to regular costumes to garb) I have had issues choosing fabrics. Does anyone have a favorite fabric for working with? Or...
Isabel W. replied:
I personally love working with a mid-weight or lightweight linen for garb. My favorite online source is http://www.fabrics-store.com - their prices are fantastic, their shipping is reasonable and quick, and they have a sale on one of their weights every week. In addition they have packages they call 'doggie bags' which are bolt ends at a discount, ranging from 1/2 yard to sometimes as much as 5 yards, with the average being about a yard apiece; they also give discounts on full bolts. Use the code ilovelinen to get a 7% discount!
Kimiko S. replied:
For good quality wools, B.Black & Sons, which has an online store. They also sell the interlinings and tailoring supplies that are sometimes needed. Grey Line Linen has been recommended to me for hanky weight linen that is of a better quality than fabrics-store.com has. I've become a linen snob more recently and prefer my linens to have fewer slubs and be soft. Otherwise, check eBay for fabric deals as I've gotten great deals on fabrics from them, but buyer beware, as I've also had folks claim one thing, and end up with something else (usually on silks).

Someone on a previous thread just posted this link in the comments: http://www.wodefordhall.com/samurai.htm looks like it could be a good start for Japanese garb.
Kimiko S. replied:
The author of wodefordhall.com recently became a laurel for all her knowledge of things Japanese, and she's always happy to answer questions. Lisa Joseph, appears to be on this list. Might want to make Japanese clothing it's own topic, as I will have questions of my own.
Lisa J. replied:
Christine Sprague, you haven't found the right place yet, that's all. Please check out www.wodefordhall.com/kosode.htm as it contains instructions for the period version of kimono. Feel free to shoot me a note if you need help. Also, be sure to check out the sca-jml Yahoo Group and the Tousando Forum at http://www.tousando.proboards.com if you're looking for information on creating a Japanese persona in the SCA.
Janet H. replied:
I think it depends on what you are making exactly. For SCA garb, linen, wool and silk are my favorites I 3 rd the endorsement for www.fabric-store.com for linen. Cosplay is a bit more open-ended in that you aren't trying to fit "historically accurate" and the costumes can vary so widely, I think it would have to be looked at on a case by case basis to determine the best fabric for each piece of a cosplay outfit.

I wear early 16 th century German and love working in wool. Normally www.fabric.com has a yearly sale and that's where I pick up my wool for the year. For inner layers I use linen and get it from www.fabric-store.com

So..now that I've kinda got this sewing thing down..I'd like to get some nice fabric. The local Joann's is nice, but kinda limited. Suggestions?
Annette W. replied:
www.fabric-store.com Three layers of the ILO-19 linen will pass most fencing armor requirements <3
Diana C. replied:
It's important to look at different places. I've found that there is different variety at each JoAnn's. I find fabric at thrift stores sometimes, yards and yards of lovely fabric for a pittance, you just have to look. Depending on your area, you might find a factory outlet for fabric like we have here in Phoenix. (The SAS outlets-http://www.sasfabricssuperstore.com/ -are amazing sources sometimes, but you do have to really sift through dross.) At large events, there is often fabric for sale. And the online sites, to me, are the last resort. I like to feel the heft and weight of a fabric before I buy it. Ebay and Craigs List are something to try as well. Best of luck to you, lady. ^_^

Rebecca B. replied:
I recommend linen, cotton, or linen/cotton blends. Many DIY wraps are made out of osnaburg (100% cotton) which is more affordable than many commercial woven baby wraps but not quite as thick or cushy as a lot of them. A lot of people also like to use woven tablecloths. However, they typically don't come long enough for a very long wrap. They do make great ring slings and mei tais though. I agree that quilter's cotton is not a good choice. It rips easily. Fabric-store.com is a great resource for linen.
