Looking for advice. Buying a Mattress in Austin. I was checking out yelp and all of the reviews seem a little too good to be true. The top 20 places all had 4 or more...

Old guy here. Buy the best mattress you can afford. You spend 1/3 of your life in it.

It is not true that they sell the same mattress for different prices in different stores. The actual scam is that no two stores will have the same model mattress. There will be always have a different name and have some exceedingly minor difference between them such as spring count or 1/8" different thickness of the pillow top. This is done intentionally so that the stores never have to make good on the promise of matching a competitor's advertised prices.
In most cases the retail price is an absurd ripoff. Start at something like 10-20% of that price in your negotiations and be willing to walk out because there is no shortage of other mattress stores around. Decline all add-ons. Suggest that you can take a non-matching box spring/foundation or keep your old one, they really don't matter much.
Absolutely do not get an air-matress such as a select comfort. They are fine for sleeping on but absolutely godawful for other bedroom activities.

We bought our non-Tempurpedic-but-still-good-memory-foam mattress from Urban Mattress off Capital of Texas highway. I think each store is locally owned and the person who sold us our mattress was the owner (Shane) and really friendly. A little steep but we were prepared to pay a lot for a mattress since it's pretty important.

I will add my vote for Mattress Man even though I bought mine elsewhere. I LOVE my bed in a box bedinabox.com And I picked one up at Ikea that fit my requirements exactly at a nice price.

I got one at one of the two Mattress Firms on Anderson ([the one closest to the Starbucks](http://i.imgur.com/1 w5 mT5X.png), I think - we were actually aiming for the other one, but ended up at this one accidentally), they have a scratch and dent (aka returns) section in the back, they are sanitized per state regulations and are oftentimes half of what they were new.

Long long time ago I used to sell mattresses for a .com here in town. Mark-ups on mattresses are insane. It is true that stores will carry the same model at different prices. Also, if you dig enough you might find that the same mattress with the same material will be $800 and it's swatch model (same in every way except for the design) will be 50% of the cost. One thing I did was get a print out of a $1200 mattress from sears.com that I took into Mattress Firm. I told them I was on the brink of buying it, but hesitant because I didn't know how it felt and didn't want to deal with returning it. The salesman said "I have two comparable models for half that price" which I looked at and got on, walked out with it and still love the mattress. Your mattress should last you a good 7-10 years. Spend decent money upfront, but see if you can find the swatch model, or do what I did and go into those places with a printout and an attitude that you want to walk out with a mattress that same day. He didn't even try to upsell me and knocked money off the ticket price.

Please buy a Serta, they are locally made in Lockhart where the factory is. I got a queen Serta mattress and box spring for $400 from Furniture in the Raw. Very comfortable mattress. You can just get the mattress too. Like $300 for mattress, $100 for box spring.

Go to Costco. Buy the thickest natural latex mattress they sell. They also sell good quality regular mattresses and frames. But a minimum 11" thick latex mattress on a pedestal is awesome and inexpensive. If you're buying a traditional spring mattress, each store has different names for similar mattress so it makes comparison shopping quite difficult. Best read up on it.

There's a good [discussion](http://www.reddit.com/r/Frugal/comments/22 xfio/mattress/) in /r/frugal right now where a former mattress store employee says to get at least 40% off the list price

I recently checked out sears and Denver in person. Decided best bang for my buck was a sealy at sears but went home bought it online at sears dot com (it was cheaper than in store ) and entered via my credit card rewards site for like 5% cash back. Delivery was like 40 and take away of old mattress 15. Opted out on box spring... All in all spent less than 270 on a queen saving about 270 from original price. Also if you can wait for a national holiday like Memorial day furniture stores generally have great sales then.

Keep your box spring, no need to replace it unless it is physically damaged somehow. Bring a pillow when shopping and spend 10 minutes or more on each mattress in your price range to get a good feel for it. Be sure to inquire about return policies. You do NOT need to buy a mattress protector or cover in order to be eligible for the manufacturer's warranty, don't fall for that shit. While I can't tell you where TO shop I can tell you NOT to shop Ikea, they sell crap mattresses. Sears outlet along 183 in north Austin has high end mattresses cheap which have been returned to Sears and fully sanitized.

The mattress industry is a big scam, like the clothing industry. Mark ups are at least 100% . That being said, buy from a reputable company. Someone suggested Costco. That's a good start. Remember you spend a third of your life on that mattress so make sure it's natural and non toxic.
