I recommend a hybrid bike for Austin. It is roughly a cross between a mountain bike and a road bike. Something like this: http://www.thebicyclerepairshop.com/rental-bikes/hybrid_files/stacks_image_1003.jpg Gears really help make cycling easier since you occasionally have to ride up hills in this city. Also, a rear rack would allow you to attack baskets/panniers so you can carry stuff with you.

I got one at Bike Farm in that price range. They have a lot of turnover so you might have a try a few times but could probably find something.

I've got a hybrid Trek FX 7.1 I'm looking to sell. I got it when I first started cycling and have since moved on. She's a great bike, I just have no use for her anymore. :( It has a mirror on it and I'll even throw in the lights. Let me know if you're interested and I can get you some more info.

My personal favorite is [Yellow Bike](http://austinyellowbike.org/), a community-run bike shop in East Austin. It is not a standard bike shop where you drop off your bike, tell them what's wrong, they fix it, you pay and ride away. At Yellow Bike volunteers help help YOU fix your own bike! I always leave Yellow Bike feeling empowered knowing that I just learned a valuable new skill in bike repair. Oh, and if you need spare parts you can get them for super cheap, even some new stuff. Now I realize that the Yellow Bike model isn't for everyone. If you would prefer not get your hands dirty and just let some experts handle your repairs then I recommend [The Peddler Bike Shop](http://www.peddlerbike.com/) at 51st and Duval. Great little shop! I have had them work on my vintage Gitane road bike as well as my new Black Sheep cruiser. Good work all-around.

Yellow Bike is great, but be patient, you have to do the work. If that interests you, go for it. It's a great start to having freedom from the evil bike mechanic. Everyone has a bad story at all the bike shops in town. I would do your own shopping around and go talk to a few. Find the one that you feel is honest with you and treats you fairly. All the shops are going to be busy now that the weather is warming up, so don't expect it to get done overnight.

Tsunami has helped me out of a serious pinch. Good people run that shop. They're on South Congress near Olturf.

Clown Dog bikes has always been great to me and have been pretty cheap. Plus it's right next to Crown and Anchor so I can go have a couple of beers while they work on my bike.

I'll throw in another vote for Eastside Pedal Pushers. Decent work at a good price.

I took my mountain bike to Clown Dog once. I explained that my rear dérailleur was throwing the chain in two specific gears. They told me no problem, and that I would hear from them in two or three days. A week later I call them and sure enough the guy had written down the wrong number. Bike was clean, chain freshly oiled. Took it out to Slaughter Trail for a test run, still has the derailleur issue. I do most basic repairs myself now. Anything more serious I take to Texas Cycle Werks.

I personally liked the experience from cycleast or Bike and Sport Shop on S.Lamar. They were both quick, professional, and very cost effective. The main thing I came to this thread is to recommend to avoid Mellow Johnny's at all cost. At one point they use to be the best in the city, but over time their egos have clouded their ability to repair the bikes and inflate the costs. Last time I took my bike there they insisted that my ghost shifting was due to derailleur needing replacement. I knew that I recently just purchased a new one, so I told them that I would have to circle back to them when I had more funds. Something just rubbed me the wrong way, so I ended up taking it to Cycleast which just had to replace a cable and do an alignment on the shifting. It literally saved me hundreds of dollars and it has been riding great sense.

The Peddler and Cycleast are my go-tos. Both have excellent staff and take good care of you.

I cannot give Bicycle Sport Shop on Lamar any higher recommendation. I bought pedals, they put them on for free. I had something weird with the derailer on my bike, they adjusted for free and gave me some tips on how to transport better. I stopped in the other day, parked my bike, and someone noticed I had a broken valve stem cover. Gave me a replacement plus two more just in case. I fucking love this place. I go the extra distance to stop in there just to get air in my tires.

Buck's Bikes. Best mechanics I know. Really honest, not overly expensive, fix things for free quite often. Also, Cannondale shop.

Bicycle Sport Shop on South Lamar is probably your best bet. As for routes, you'll probably need to be more specific on what you're looking for. Might start with what kind of bike are you looking to ride.

I'm partial to Lance's shop, [Mellow Johnnys](http://austin.mellowjohnnys.com/rentals). Bicycle sports shop is a good place too, but it's situated in a very, very busy intersection of Austin (not sure what type of riders you guys are). There are several rides that leave from MJs on Saturday and Sunday as well that can accommodate every skill level. BSS also offers the same. If you guys are into mountain biking, the barton creek greenbelt is something you'd want to check out, or at least go for a hike.
