There is a pug rescue and a shepherd rescue in town.

The Animal Foundation has lots of small breeds, but you have to check often and get there early to get the "best" dogs. Pepper (formerly Esperanza) came to Buddy Dog in Sudbury from All Sato Rescue. She is the love of our lives!

They are not the easiest to train with the list you created. Sometimes they are stubborn and will fight you to walk their direction or just sit and refuse to move. Mine is not the best with people and kids. She's fine at the dog park and daycare with other dogs.

All shibas are different. For example my sesame absolutely loves people and kids. Goes crazy for attention. But she does not like other dogs. At all.

As someone that lives in CT get on as many wait lists as you can because there aren't many reputable breeders in New England. If you want to buy from one of them you're going to have to wait until probably Spring time for a puppy. That being said, there are tons of puppies on places like puppyfind.com but 100% of the listings are backyard breeders or puppy mills. I personally don't mind some backyard breeders, but most people here do.

Shibas most likely will not get along with other animals. They were bred to hunt and kill game. Shibas very often kill cats and small animals. Mine has killed a cat larger than she was that got into our yard before I could stop her, I still feel horrible about it. She's killed birds, toads, chipmunks and squirrels and has attempted to chase deer. She also does not like other dogs and needs her space. If you are hell-bent on a Shiba check out the DC and Midwest Shiba rescues. Fill out an application and tell them what you're looking for in a dog and they could have an older Shiba that meets all of your requirements. I'd personally check out /r/dogs and fill out the breed survey there. Shibas do not sound like the right dog for you.

1. The direction you want to walk is more of a suggestion to the Shiba. The shiba gives no fucks where you want to go. If they go in the direction you want to go, it just happens to be they want to go that way too. I'm not trying to be funny. As for other animals, Kai is hot and cold. In day care or a dog park, he is in heaven (no seriously, when we go to petco he always pulls me to the pooch play). When walking down the street and a dog just comes up and invades his personal space without his approval, he snaps. Potty training is easy with a shiba because they like to be clean. Kai trained himself since day one to go outside. So I never really had to worry about it. 2. Look at the AKC website for reputable breeders in your area. 3. A lab aims to please and will always want to be there for you. Even when you poop. They want to help. Shibas are more aloof. Getting a Shiba is like have a mix between a cat and a dog. One moment they want to play and do dog stuff. The next moment they want to just be alone and not be bothered with others.
