Ok WF friends, my son got bit by a tick this week. We found it tonight and it appears it have already been there for a day or two. We just moved here and are currently...
Michelle W. replied:
Dr. Clark- urgent care on main. He's wonderful! Aside from the risk of lyme's, my husband has had 2 very serious bacterial infections from tick bites.
Susan W. replied:
Yes, ticks carry more than lyme disease, they carry co-infections that can be just as serious. Unfortunately, many insurance companies don't cover for testing for those co-infections. http://healthland.time.com/2013/07/19/theres-a-new-disease-spread-by-ticks-and-its-not-lyme/
Susan W. replied:
Jamie King, I contacted my friend who has chronic lyme disease as do a couple of her kids. She asked me to share this link, a well-known doctor who treats children with lyme disease. The link contains some important information about lyme disease, how it's transmitted, and how long it takes for the bacteria to be introduced into the body ( it can take only hours, sometimes ). Lyme disease can be a silent disease that rears its head months or years late. I'm so glad you're taking this seriously, what a fantastic mother you are! I do hope your post will encourage other people in the area to research lyme disease too. I never took ticks seriously, when I was a kid, it technically wasn't summer in my mind until I pulled a few off of me - boy was I wrong. It's not uncommon for a lyme literate doctor to prescribe a long round of antibiotics for someone who had lyme like symptoms after a bite, a 3-4 weeks round of doxy may be prescribed. don't be surprised. It's a small price to pay, in my opinion. http://www.childrenslymenetwork.org/lyme/
Brandon M. replied:
Be more concerned with the other stuff, Rocky Mountain spotted fever etc. See study below about Lyme disease in NC. http://www.northcarolinahealthnews.org/2012/02/03/lyme-disease-not-likely-in-nc-but-caution-should-prevail/
Melissa M. replied:
I'm a nurse at MedAccess Urgent Care in Youngsville and we see children ages 6 months and up. We have wonderful providers here that will take your concerns very serious. No appointment needed and we're open 7 days a week.
Patricia H. replied:
Jamie, 5 of my 6 family members have Lyme. 2 of us were recently reinfected. There are two very different schools of thought of Lyme Disease in the medical field. Dr. Belcea is the one who diagnosed my family. Be sure when watching for symptoms that you know what to watch for, most people just look for flu symptoms or pain but that is only a tiny part of what you need to watch for . Fatigue is a huge indicator as is mental confusion and depression. The NC protocol s 21 days of doxy as a preventive. We get tons of bites but do not take doxy with each but with one embedded that long, it can be scary. The sooner it is treated, the less of an issue it will be in the future. www.thelymebasket.com has lots of good info.
Patricia H. replied:
Wakefield Family Medicine (Dr. Belcea)
Dede M. replied:
Dr Clark at urgent care is fabulous with kids if you are in a hurry and not sure about picking a pediatrician yet.
Anna K. replied:
Dr. Clark at Wake forest urgent care is great especially if you have not figured out what pediatrician to use. Dr. Belcea is a great choice for Lyme and other tick borne illnesses.
Susan W. replied:
Call Dr. Jeffries at North Family Medicine. I have chronic lyme disease, diagnosed years after the bites (s). I never had the bulls eye rash. I'm glad you're taking it seriously. Lyme disease is a nasty little monster of a thing that can show up years later and can truly be a a game changer. Most people don't understand the seriousness of it. There was man featured on the news who lost his ability to walk and speak because he had a longstanding case of lyme and didn't know it. Understand that a false negative test is very very common too. I am very against antibiotics in most cases but lyme disease isn't one of them. Most doctors are not lyme literate at all.
Naomi B. replied:
MedAccess Urgent Care in Youngsville! Walk right in. Very little, if any wait time. We went in for a tick bite that got swollen/huge. My daughter had STARI, the Dr there didn't take chances and started an antibiotic just in case.
Rachel F. replied:
I do the same as Susan because it seems like I pull one off of a kid on a weekly basis this summer. However, if you are really concerned, I know Dr. Clark at W.F. Urgent Care (across from Walmart) takes tick bites very seriously and is really proactive. Any time we see him for other issues, he asks if we could have been bitten by a tick. He is super thorough.
Naomi B. replied:
And yes, Dr Hamp at Growing Child is amazing!
Dawn B. replied:
Jeffers Mann is a great practice
Deanna M. replied:
Dr. Belcea of Wakefield Family Medicine specializes in Lyme Disease. I'm not sure if he still sees children but even though he wouldn't be your son's pediatrician it would be worth taking him for there to evaluate the tick bite.
Denise M. replied:
Oberlin Road Pediatrics in Raleigh has taken care of three generations of my family. Hoping all is well with your precious one.
We just moved here from Charlotte - have a 2 yr old and 3 mo old. Pediatrician recommendations?
Melanie C. replied:
Village Pediatrics in Southern Village (919) 969-6911 Love Dr. Gush!!! If I call with a concern they always get us in the same day and they're open Saturdays. They also have a great on call system.
Kathryn C. replied:
Dr. Morton at Chapel Hill Peds is wonderful!
Leah W. replied:
Chapel Hill Pediatrics
Maria B. replied:
My daughter is 2.5, and we've been going to The Chapel Hill Pediatrics and Adolescents since her birth. They are very good, especially with before-after hours/emergency care since they offer extended hours for existing patients, and you don't even need an appointment for before hours walk in. As for after hours, we were always able to get an appointment within 20-30 minutes. This saved us many times since our medical emergencies tend to happen on Friday nights and I hate going to emergency rooms at the hospital.
Heather L. replied:
Carrboro Pediatrics and Internal Medicine is our office.
Stephanie W. replied:

Lara C. replied:

Rima I. replied:
Village Pediatrics in Southern Village. Excellent, easy-going practice with accessible hours.
Lara C. replied:
I meant to add to my post above, my girls are now 11 and 9 and we've been with University Pediatrics since they were 3 and 1 years old. We use Dr. Zimmerman normally but have been helped by other doctors in the practice during emergencies, of which we've had a few, and they are all awesome. Even though it's a further drive for us now that we're in Carrboro, and our girls rarely need a doctor anymore, we still use them. Highly recommend.
Nicole F. replied:
Dr. Woodrum or Morton, CH Pediatrics. I was a patient there!
Andrea C. replied:
Chapel Hill pediatrics!!
Anitra G. replied:
Dr. Woodrum at Chapel Hill Pediatrics is an awesome Pediatrician. However, you could choose any doctor in the practice and receive excellent care:)!
Nivia O. replied:
Village Pediatrics in Southern Village. Dr Gush is excellent!
Sharon G. replied:
Chapel Hill Pediatrics. We have Dr. Hosford but we've seen several doctors there as well and they've all been great.
Michelle H. replied:
Dr. Chris Morton at CH Pediatrics. Attentive and informed. When my son was having bouts of breathing issues he gave us his cell to call at any time and met us at the clinic on a weekend to give us a clinic nebulizer.
Kiersten L. replied:
Dr. Merritt at Chapel Hill Peds. We love her!
Anne J. replied:
Carrboro Pediatrics & Internal Medicine is great. And parents can go there, too, so everyone can have the same primary care location, which is convenient.
Just moved to the area. Any recommendations for children's pediatricians? Or, ones to avoid would be good to know, too.
Kristin B. replied:
Villiage Peds or Carrboro Peds and Internal Med (this is a family practice)

Carrboro Pediatrics & Internal Medicine is terrific. We love every doc in the practice! (and adults can go there too for primary care if you have a kid who is a patient there)
Rima I. replied:
Village Pediatrics. Great practice.
Kendra B. replied:
Village Pediatrics!! Dr. Fitzsimmins is amazing and one of the nicest people you will ever meet. So knowledgable and caring towards children. And if there was ever such thing as a physician who is a cheerleader for what a good job at parenting you are doing when things seem rough (newborn days, sick baby, general concern about your child) she fits this description perfectly. We always leave the office feeling great about the medical care our son is receiving
Katie V. replied:
Chris Morton at Chapel Hill Peds. We love him.
Cait B. replied:
Our whole family uses Dr. Caulfield at Carrboro Pediatrics and Internal Medicine. We're crazy about her! She's about to go on maternity leave, though. We've seen most of the other doctors there and have liked them all a lot.
anyone have a female doctor they love at Chapel Hill Pediatrics?
Deirdre C. replied:
Dr. Jennifer Singleton is really great! She was my doctor for the past 10 years or so
Verlene K. replied:
Dr Laille
Marisa S. replied:
Dr Laille moved Ohio
Alyson B. replied:
Andy Dunk, fellow church member!
Kelly R. replied:
I love Dr Singleton, she's my girls' doctor. But I've seen Dr Braithwaite a couple of times now and have been so impressed with her - she's young and enthusiastic and has really taken time to explain things.
Sasha G. replied:
Dr. Merritt is great. My kids see Dr. Morton, but he's not a female. He is fantastic though'
Marla B. replied:
Dr Christian was THE BEST but he retired:( He was Brooks Pediatrician and when he left we left. Love Morton! Merritt is awesome but be prepared to be there a long time. We are at Duke Children's Primary Care now and they are fast, efficient and awesome!:)
Jaimonye' A. replied:
Dr. Salter. I've been going to her since I was little. Yes I still go to the pediatrics:)
Chapel Hill/Carrboro friends with kids, we need pediatrician recommendations. Who do you love and why?
Jason D. replied:
Village Pediatrics in Southern Village. It's a small practice with very caring docs and nurses. They take their time and you never feel rushed. Highly recommend!
Lindsay H. replied:
We love Chapel Hill Pediatrics (they have a Durham office as well). Evening and weekend after hours, urgent care, and the doctors know their patients very well. They have always been supportive of our parenting choices and very encouraging.
Jeannine R. replied:
Dr. Gush is our favorite. She's very knowledgable and experienced and keeps everyone calm. Wade seems in awe of her and does whatever she asks. They have great hours, too.
Gretchen S. replied:
Ami Goldstein at UNC Family Medicine can care for the whole family. She's a CNM and FNP, and because she is in a teaching practice (Family Medicine residents train with her), she is always current and has a strong evidence-based practice. She may also ...See More
Pam D. replied:
Love Chapel Hill Peds - both the girls go there. We see Dr. Cooley in the Durham office who has been very supportive of breastfeeding, great with our older daughter, and very calm. The nurses are all very friendly as well. They offer meet and greets for parents who are choosing a ped. I've also heard great things about Village Peds. It's nice to have someplace close for those last minute visits...
Lindsay H. replied:
We also see Dr. Cooley and love her!
Alison K. replied:
We like Chapel Hill peds as well. We go to the Chapel Hill location and see Dr. Hosford. My boss takes her kids to Village Pediatrics (I think) and really likes them as well. I would recommend going wherever is closer to your house everything else being equal. You will find yourself going there a lot I the first month or so.
Maggie D. replied:
We've used Dr. Lawrence at Carrboro Pediatrics on Fidelity Street from the beginning and love her. I've also seen Dr. Branscom there; she's wonderful too.
Molly A. replied:
Dr. Goldbach at UNC Chapel Hill North. Funny, chill. 4 kids of his own. Knows what to worry about and what not to worry about. OR Dr. Starnes (Same practice.) A little more practical, also has four kids.
MaryBeth P. replied:
Dr. Kim Gush, Village Peds at Southern Village. She's wonderful, a good and close. close friend of mine and their practice is top notch. Casey goes there as did Jen before she moved to WI. Close, convenient and they (as least Kim is) are Tar Heel fans! Quality care, convenience, and the right sports affiliation -- sounds like a good combination to me!
