Does anyone know of a good vet that doesn't charge crazy prices. We've been going to Brentwood for years but their pricing has gotten insane for our little 9lb dog. ...
Scott A. replied:
We've always gotten excellent treatment and reasonable prices from https://www.facebook.com/209371752433702 Portsmouth Animal Hospital. Our dog Gooch was a nervous wreck the first time we took him there, and Dr. Ligon got on the floor with him and let him (a 50 pound pitbull) on her lap. He was drooling like crazy and she was infinitely patient with him while doing his exam. Since then they've worked with us on his fear of getting his nails trimmed and he actually likes going there. I've never felt gouged by their prices. We had a similar experience to the original poster at Brentwood with our cat. They wanted an endless series of expensive laser treatments for her urination problem, while another vet (Dr. Mitchell at Greenbrier Animal Care Center - another great choice) suggested trying wet food which cleared it right up.

My parents take their dog to a place out in franklin. We love Bennett's Creek Vet for our two dogs (our vet there is known for working with boxers, which is what we have) but do find them to be pricey. We'd probably take our dogs to the place in Franklin too for how much cheaper they are, but by the time you factor in time spent driving there and gas money, for us it isn't worth it.
Valarie T. replied:
Portsmouth Animal Hospital is where I take our 9 pound sweetheart and I have always been very happy with them.
Ed W. replied:
We go to Norfolk SPCA for shots. Much cheaper and the money goes to a good cause.

Ray if you dont mind a ride to Williamsburg, Dr. Bonnie Brown is awesome! She did Bellas surgery and we have decided to keep seeing her since she really cares about the animals and her prices are reasonable. The surgery would have cost $1500 per leg at all the local vets and she was only $400 per leg. She was recommended to us and we have been back 2 other times for checkups etc. Love her! If she was a people doctor, I would go to her in a heartbeat. Jolly Pond Vet.
Kristina W. replied:
Academy Animal Care in Suffolk is great. Very loving and caring vets. Please note, though, that the size of your dog has nothing to do with the cost of the services nor the care he needs. Whether your doggie is 9 lbs or 100 lbs you want the same high quality of care and cost is not related to the size of the dog.
A few days a week they do a Paws clinic at the care-a-lot on Indian river road. They are really reasonable with their prices. We had our two beagles rabies shots, check ups, and heart worm pills for 6 months for $115 ish.

Regular vet hospitals normally won't accept those types of vouchers. They accept the records of the vaccines and tests, of course. Most of the vouchers are meant to be used at very specific places, usually locations like the SPCA or the humane society.
Lauren H. replied:
Not sure if they'll do it, but we go to Bennett's Creek Veterinary Care. You could call and see. (757) 483-5990

I've rescued two dogs here locally and everything was done before I got them ... WB Vet has always been good to us
Elaine M. replied:
We use VCA on Airline for both our rescue babies, Dr. Hubbard is wonderful!
Joyce A. replied:
All vets in my opinion should honor that certificate. I understand that they are there to make money, but my feelings are you do something like being a vet because you love animals. I really don't think seeing one animal would hurt their pocketbook. Try the Humane Society on Battlefield Blvd, they are not that expensive
Jennifer F. replied:
A health certificate is required by rescues to transport dogs across state lines. It does not verify vaccinations. You should have a standard rabies certificate provided by the vet who administered the vaccination, which should be honored. If you don't have that then I would request it from the rescue and vet. Rabies is the only state "required" vaccination. Feel free to PM me. I coordinate Bullmastiff Rescue and use Nansemond Vet Clinic across from Obici. Thank you for adopting your dog from a rescue.
Bethany S. replied:
I wouldn't switch vets just because they will not honor a certificate for a free exam. It isn't their fault they don't have the money to provide free exams for each first time rescue. Typically those who do honor it is because they have a deal with the rescue for payment. You have been seeing WB vet for 13 yrs and clearly have been happy, I would go in and get that initial exam so you can get on the record.
Also Chesapeake Humane Society may accept it. http://chesapeakehumane.org
Carla B. replied:
Call Southhampton County Vet in Franklin. I don't know if she honors the certificate that you are talking about but you can ask. She is very reasonable priced,a lot more affordable than the vets in town. She also is a great Dr.

My daughter-in-law has just joined the practice at North Suffolk Animal Hospital. She is a sweetheart and has a heart for animals/pets and is very tender, gentle and caring. She is establishing her clientele so it is not difficult to get an appointment with her. Her name is Dr. Ariel Koger. I would highly recommend her even if she wasn't married to my son. But I'm awfully glad she is!

I highly recommend Brentwood Vet, they are on GW Highway. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and kind, the veterinarians are highly skilled with a great bedside manner. We had to euthanize our cat in September. The vets did not leave "any stone unturned" in trying to bring her back to good health. They all ALWAYS go above and beyond for my pets. Good luck in your search.

Pam, check to see if any of these places have 'Care Credit.' I have used it many times when I was in a pinch. Anyway, it is a credit card and you just make monthly payments. Some will give you up to $5,000 credit and you can get up to 3 yrs to pay it off. Just make sure they don't over charge you for whatever it is your baby need's.. Many Vet's here in Ct use Care Credit and it is great, so long as you don't skip a payment. Check it out.
