Replacing Carpet - Solid Hardwood, Engineered Hardwood, Bamboo, or Laminate Wood for house with big dog? Looking to replace carpet in living room and replace vinyl...

I hear if you have dogs, go with a laminate. That stuff is super strong. I just purchased 750 sq feet plus the pad for about $1800.00 delivered to my door from a company called bestlaminate.com. I am happy with it and I cant scratch it if I try. http://i.imgur.com/rvJJvQe.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/hyKFuWh.jpg Oh and I have old hardwood that was trashed under mine but I chose to go with floating. My wife, mom, and dad installed it in an afternoon.

I have laminate and its easy to swiffer-mop up, but I don't think my greyhound likes it too much. He slips around on the floor and has developed a complex any time he has to walk across it.

Look at LVP (Luxury Vinyl Plank) too. It has better water resistance than laminate, is easier to install, and comes with a 20 years warranty in most cases on the wear layer.

I have a golden too! Great breed. Mine's only 70 lbs though.
We have a hickory handscraped engineered hardwood. Even with a wood as strong as hickory, it still scratches on occasion, mostly from the dogs.
I think you are absolutely right to want handscraping - even though we have a few scratches from our dogs, the high level of variance in the finish really hides them. They are only really visible when the sun is at a really low angle in the sky.
We have hardwood everywhere on the main floor, not unlike what you are thinking of doing. I kind of wish we had put carpet in the living room, because I think it would reduce the scratches. The dogs don't really like running on the wood because they have almost no traction, but they don't really have anywhere else to go right now. I think having a carpeted living room would change that.
ATTENTION DOG OWNERS: I am looking for an affordable obedience class to enroll my dog in! He has a bad habit of nipping at people, (playfully, but it still can hurt)...

Scott at Evolution Canine is awesome. I think with dog training, you get what you pay for and Scott has not disappointed us. He is able to tailor our training to our needs, so it has been worth every penny.
