We highly recommend Kennel Club USA. It is a bit of a drive but the trainer, John, is amazing. We interviewed several and liked him because he balances a variety of approaches based on the individual dog and the family. Highly recommend! http://www.kennelclub-usa.com/

Phil Rheale at https://www.facebook.com/122644761113376The Animal Care Center at Cherry Way. He's the BEST! His training is inexpensive and his classes are limited to 3 dogs. You get lots of one-on-one. He's also a vet tech, and answers so many questions. We've been extremely happy with his training.

One of my best friends is a certified dog trainer. She is really good and does positive reinforcement. Yes u need to be the alpha, but shouldn't have to involve scruffing or pinning Logan to the ground. Her name is Ami Jones, she has a fb page... "get a cue". Or the website is getacuellc.com.

A veterinary behaviorist (true definition) is a veterinarian who has completed a residency in behavior - like a veterinary cardiologist or orthopedic surgeon, but for behavior. There is only one in Ohio (Dr. Herron at OSU) and about 45 in the US. http://www.dacvb.org/resources/find/ Many people call themselves behaviorists, without credentials. Other credentialed behavior professionals are CAABs and CPDTs.

Lisa S. replied:
I agree that if that is all that's needed a trainer should be fine - but I'd go with one endorsed by OSU / that uses positive methods. The handout on how to choose a trainer is good. I've heard really, really great things about http://www.posidog.org/...See More
Suggestions for place that does good, affordable, dog obedience classes?? Thanks!

I have been training my dogs for over 15 years and compete with them and know many great positive trainers. My list in order of the best first. Elissa O'Sullivan NoBadDogsOhio.com (teaches classes at Polaris area and Sawmill Rd. - she is simply the most knowledgeable trainer and behaviorist I have ever met) Adventure Unleashed - on Main st. in Reynoldsburg. Agility and Rally for Fun in Gahanna (Sunday Obedience classes with Annette Neff.) www.anythinggoesfordogs.com in Marysville and Dog Talk training on Billingsley at Sawmill. All use scientifically proven, positive training methods and are force-free trainers. I highly recommend them all. Especailly Elissa O Sullivan. Have taken many, many classes with her.

Thek9 guy. He's helped a lot! Improvement right after the first session. It's one on one and in your home. Super convenient
headinthered replied:
Firstly- walk away calmly from the puppy when they do this - or turn your back it it - literally no response to jumping other than neutral. As soon as the puppy sits in frustration or boredom, reward that behavior with lavish but not over excited attention .
This can take a few days for a puppy to learn but eventually you stop turning around when they finally sit and stop jumping.
Ideally you should go to a puppy class because the classes train YOU not the puppy on how to train a dog.
It’s also good socialization.
I recommend Posipaws in Hilliard but honestly as as long as you do the work- even pets smarts puppy training class is good.
Just remember. EVERYONE. In the house should go to the classes and CONSISTENCY is the key to a successfully trained dog.
Dog training never stops.

Hello! :) I'm actually a new dog trainer here in Columbus. So I'd love to help you out!!
I have 3 years of dog handling experience. I last worked at a local dog trainer where I learned all about appropriate techniques and how to train a dog basic obedience, while also dabbling in tougher issues like leash reactivity and dog/human aggression.
I see many others are bringing up 'purely positive dog training', and that is not exactly where I stand, as some behaviors cannot be fixed with pure positivity based training. What I do is find the perfect happy medium to produce effective and balanced training. Balanced training is the absolute best way to help your dog be the best version of himself!
I can train your pup things like sit-stays (and don't move until I say so), down-stays (and don't get up until I say so), place (lay on your bed until I say so), and leash walking (walking next to or behind the knee), and other things too! And of course we'd also tackle the jumping issue immediately.
Let me know if you'd like to discuss further :) and if not, that's totally okay too! I wrote this kinda fast (lunch time!), so I apologize if I'm scattered!
Thanks for reading!!!

I've posted this before so I've copied it below.
I've been working with my dog and our trainer for over 5 years now (after hunting for 6 months to find someone) and he's simply one of the best in the Columbus region. He's not the most expensive nor is he the cheapest but his system is beyond amazing.
Daniel at Off Leash K9 Columbus was able to completely rebuild the relationship I had with my GSD. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXn-30akKUs
http://columbusdogtrainers.com/
If you have any questions at all, I will gladly answer them.
I'll briefly explain his system that a lot of other trainers don't bother using. A lot of trainers simply use a treat reward system where the dog performs the task, gets the treat, and the system repeats. However this does not work well under distraction.
The OLK9 system leverages:
Voice Pressure - tone of voice, loudness/softness, and command calls
Leash Pressure - taut leash, relaxed leash, leash length
Spatial Pressure - Giving the dog room or closing the distance between the dog
Variable Treat Rewards - Rather than giving a treat every time the dog completes a task, we leverage a 5:1 random treat ratio where the dog has to repeat the task and is given the treat randomly as to not pick up a pattern.
I've been working with these guys for over 5 years now and we've done all of the following: Sit, Down, Stand, Recall, Heel (on/off leash), Place, Off, Through, Finish, and other commands/tricks
