Good restaurants in the University Park area? I'm flying in to Dallas on Tuesday from London, and, since my hotel is near SMU, I was wondering if anyone could recommend...
crumbschief replied:
If you cant get southern fried chicken in London you should go to Bubba's across the street from SMU. http://www.bubbascatering.org/ The website is geared towards their catering but they definitely have dine-in and carry out for your individual needs.

Seems you should get a ride to the Knox Henderson area or walk. There you will find Chuy's (Mexican), Sangria (Tapas), La Duni (reccommended by other people here). Since you are not a Texan, you won't mind walking east on Henderson. You will find bars and restaurants there as well, including the Velvet Taco, Fireside Pies (pizza), and other restaurants and bars.
LA_simon replied:
i don't care, mi cocina is always a Dallas favorite, Highland Park villlage. You will most likely see celebrities (such as the Wilson brothers) while in the bar area.
phillycheesesteak replied:
Try burger house, goffs (one of a kind burger sauce) or bubbas, all on hillcrest. Goffs is directly across from campus while bubbas and burger house are just a little north.
TheGrest replied:
There's a place walking distance from SMU called Snyder Plaza. Great sandwiches and beer at East Hampton Sandwich Company. Great German market / restaurant called Kuby's - they have an awesome breakfast. Bubba's for fried chicken.
Amazing pizza at mcfarlin / hillcrest called Olivellas. Save room for a nutella dessert pizaa.
For cheap Mexican go with Desperados at University and Greenville. Manny's is pretty good too but a bit further. I'd avoid El Fenix with all of my might. For fancy/legit Mexican go with Javier's. MesoMaya is another good choice. Although Mi Cocina may be a dallas staple most people realize the food sucks (although not as bad as el Fenix)
For real tacos I like El Atoron. For amazing American tacos (breakfast or lunch) go with Good 2 Go taco. Others worth mention are Torchy's tacos and Taco Joint.
For a fancy meal I'd go with FT33. Then go to the meddlesome moth for drinks.
For burgers my favorite is Goodfriends burgers and beer garden. It's next to Good 2 Go but is about 10-15 minutes from Smu. Hopdoddy is a bit closer and is also very good. Twisted Root is okay.
gypsywagon replied:
Chuy's on McKinney! The best Tex-Mex in Texas, straight from Austin. Also, for breakfast, Breadwinners (located on McKinney and Lovers) has awesome awesome breakfast.
nikov replied:
I'd check out Mariano's. The food is great and it's where the first margarita machine was invented if you're looking for a hook. I think the food is some of the better Tex-Mex you're going to find, but maybe not the most traditional. For example, they have an great chile relleno, but it's grilled instead of covered in the traditional egg batter and fried.

TEX-MEX: Chuy's on Knox & McKinney Mi Cocina in Highland Park Village STEAK: Bob's Chophouse on Lemmon Del Frisco's Grille on McKinney The Capital Grille at the Crescent ITALIAN: Patrizio in Highland Park Village AMERICAN: Cafe Express at Mockingbird Station for a quick and good lunch. Hillstone on Preston at Northwest Highway for the best crabcakes and prime rib. BREAKFAST: Cafe Brazil on Central Expressway Service Road@Fondren. The Dream Cafe on Routh Bread Winners on McKinney Ave I could really go on forever.

Try La Duni for Mexican food. Damn good. (And before somebody corrects me, no, it's not attempting to be "authentic" Mexican - [according to their website, they blend Mexican w/ European traditions](http://laduni.com/about-us/)). >Blending European traditions with Latin American soul, La Duni mixes the flavors, aromas, colors, textures, forms and sounds of both cultures to create the ultimate “Mestizo” experience which could be described as “the taste of freshly made black beans with a splash of Cilantro Mojo sauce, soft scrambled eggs with Tomato Hogao Salsa and the earthy essence of grilled handmade white corn Arepas”.

Here's my 2 cents on Mexican food:
* Blue Goose on Greenville is very good, with real spicy salsa too. Fuzzy's has delicious tamales and is decently priced.
* On the Border and Desperado's are terrible, and El Fenix tasted bland to me (NW Highway location).
* Velvet Taco is great for little street tacos, but it can be relatively expensive. They also have locally brewed sodas on tap, which is a nice treat in itself.
* (Edit) La Duni on McKinney Avenue is delicious! Just ate there for brunch, the Migas Cuatro Quesos was tasty and they have a real espresso bar.
As for other cuisines:
* I've heard The Grape is an amazing restaurant in Dallas, if you want a higher end meal.
* In Snider Plaza, Kuby's and Bubba's are good.
* With Cafe Brazil, don't go during the middle night, the service has been terrible every time I've gone during those hours. The Classic Breakfast (I'd also like to suggest ordering the Pancrepes) should satisfy your breakfast craving. If not, try Original House of Pancakes off of Lemmon Avenue, it's great.
* Pho Is For Lovers and Royal Thai are also good.
* I know it's a chain, but Snuffers has great burgers and cheese fries. It's by Preston and Northwest Highway if you're willing for drive that far.
* Also, if you're flying into Texas all the way from Europe, try Whataburger at least once if you want fast food.
mutatron replied:
Torchy's Tacos on SMU Blvd has breakfast tacos. It's inexpensive, casual, hip, lots of beers.
El Fenix is still my favorite tex mex. I don't usually like chain restaurants, but the original Fenix is downtown, so they're kind of a Dallas institution. There's one on Northwest Highway near Hillcrest.
Gloria's on Greenville Ave is not Mexican but Salvadoran, I think. They have excellent tamales, and also yucca fries, platanos, and really good black beans. They also have brunch.
I recommend against On the Border, Cantina Laredo, Uncle Julio's, and Chuy's.
If you want to hang with the students, there's a Cafe Brazil on 75 north of Dyer. Good breakfasts and fresh ground coffee.
Sangria on Cole near Knox is a cool place for brunch, and they also have tapas in the evening.
edit: Okay, rag on me for this if you must, but there's an IHOP on 75 north of Southwestern Blvd. Yes it's a chain, but I had breakfast at one recently and it was excellent if you want an American breakfast with eggs over easy, sausage, bacon, grits, and pancakes. Atmosphere is a little cheesy, sure, but the food was great at the one I went to.
akoons replied:
For breakfast you should go to Lucky's Diner on Preston. I recently moved to Chicago from Dallas and I miss that place like hell.
Heart_of_Tara replied:
* Torchy's has great tacos that are offbeat and fun. Try the Dirty Sanchez.
* Bangkok City on the corner of SMU/Greenville (across the street from Torchy's) is great Thai food. Try the Pad Woon Sen.
* Chuy's on McKinney is great Tex Mex and has a fun atmosphere, but it can get pretty noisy. If you haven't had blue corn tortillas, they have a few options.
* If you wind up further south on Greenville, check out Pho is For Lovers, a funky little Vietnamese bistro. They do Bun Bo Hue on the weekend (a spicy noodle soup) that my husband raves about.
* Check out Urban Taco at Mockingbird station. They have a lot of great Mexican food, but my favorite is their mix and match street taco plate. Do not miss the green rice and their cebollitas (sauteed green onions).
* Also in Mockingbird Station - Rockfish. It's a chain here, but I think it's a good chain. Their seared ahi tuna appetizer is out of sight exquisite.
I hope you have a great time here!

I can't believe that these places haven't been mentioned yet Shin Sei sushi - not only do they have some of the best sushi around (try the hawaiian sashimi for a mind blowing experience) their kitchen puts out some amazing hot food items. A little pricy though. You must try the Brussels sprouts and fried rice...trust me! Marquee grill is also a great place. some of the best drinks around with a bar program created by Jason Kosmos. Amazing Sunday brunch too!!

Do yourself a favor and go to LA banqueta. It'll be 3 or 4 miles from.where you are but its actual, legit, tacos. Get the suadero and go to the goat afterwards for a few pints.
Also go to bubbas while you're here. Its been said its the best fried chicken in the US. Also of you're looking for a Texas tradition go to Ozona for the chicken fried steak. It was recently on food paradise.
I'll agree with La duni but mainly for their quattro leches. Its maybe the tastiest thing I've ever eaten.
As for TeX mex, my go to is desperadoes because its right next to me, but I prefer blue goose over it. I think pappasidos is a bit better and el fenix is a glorified taco bueno.
Yes do go to whataburger and get a patty melt. Best fast food ever.
Nearly all recommendations in this thread are legit. I'm not a personal fan of chuys but people love it.
Henks and kubys you may want to stay away from because I would assume you have much better German food in London than we have in Texas.

I stayed at New York New York in 2015 because we got a pretty good deal. Around $800 for 4 nights. Its was good but there's not many headliners there. And no day parties. Next time I go, I'll book earlier and somewhere having pool parties.

I have stayed at the MGM and at Excalibur. The MGM was amazing but expensive. We had a large group and that is the only way the MGM was afforded. The hotel has wonderful dining options, friendly staff and a huge amount of entertainment options. The Excalibur was garbage. Poor/slow service, room wasn't even cleaned, rude staff and overall a very poor experience. The casino is so old! It's Cheaper but still not worth the money. Don't even think about it.
We are going to the Bay Area in August. Is there a great hotel in Downtown San Francisco you would recommend? Only one night.
