The best in Dallas is Dr. Cooper at the Carrell Clinic. He used to be the orthopedic doc for the Dallas Stars and now is the orthopedic doc for the Dallas Cowboys. Super cool offices with really neat sports pictures of all of his clients in each room.

I've managed to avoid additional surgery thanks to Dr. Khan and Dr. Zakaria at Interventional Spine and Pain Management. I've been good for a year now. You might want to give them a shot. Most of my problems are caused by complains over time from previous spinal surgery.

Depending on where it is I have a neurologist that has not done any invasive surgery on me, but I would probably use if it came down to get the brain implants should my condition become worse. I know someone that had to have 2 vertebrae fused and he had nothing but praise for his surgeon. His debilitating pain is completely gone post-op. He's out of town but I'll ask which doc he used when he gets back. I tried to use his doc for my condition but he wasn't trained on the machine/treatment for my specific issue.

How high or low on your back is the injury ? If it's relatively high up you may want to be looking for a neurosurgeon, if it's lower (say S2 for example) you will want to look for an orthopedic surgeon. But, u/91 t4 is correct, don't get surgery unless you absolutley need to.

My recommendation: Stick with a neuro surgeon over orthopedic. They tend to be a little slower and meticulous with their surgeries, and I would rather have one of them working on me than most of the ortho guys in town. With that said, I can recommend several surgeons I've worked with that I know get good results. As someone has recommended, Dr. Young with VCU is excellent. In fact, all of the VCU neuro team is good, but keep in mind if you're going to be going to a university setting, chances are you'll have a resident performing most of the case. Luckily, the guys on spine rotation right now are pretty good. [Placide](http://www.healthgrades.com/physician/dr-ricky-placide-x5n3p) is a hilarious guy and great ortho surgeon in the area. He is also a PT, so surgery is usually his last treatment course. If you had to go ortho, he would be my first choice for the ortho guys in town. The surgeons at [Tuckahoe Orthopedics](http://www.tuckahoeortho.com/physicians) are generally pretty good, especially the pediatric guys. Tuten and Sharps are some of the best I've worked with in the business for correcting scoliosis in children, but I suspect that is not what you are looking for. You would be working with either Simpson or Vanichkachorn. My personal recommendation with those two would be to steer clear of Simpson, but only because he doesn't tend to use IONM or trust in its findings, so that's frustrating for me professionally. He has good outcomes, though. Van is another good option for lumbar corrections. Another option, if you're willing to go a bit south of Richmond, would be [Kalluri](http://www.healthgrades.com/physician/dr-prakasam-kalluri-yncwf), however he mostly works on the cervical spine (i.e., neck). Source: I'm a neurophysiologist, and I've worked with most of the guys in town making sure they don't fuck up the patients while under the knife. And trust me, I know the ones that have done so.

He worked as a Navy SEAL medic before before becoming a neurosurgeon and went through a one year fellowship that focused solely on spinal surgery. He unfortunately works down in Norfolk, so you would have to drive down there for a consult. However, his contract with Sentara is NOT dependent on the number of surgeries he does. So he won't pressure you to have surgery if it isn't needed.
