Also check some of the parks in Santa Cruz mountans like Big Basin - they have camping in and around there I believe. Also Butano State PArk, Bloom Creek Campground, Sempervirens, Huckleberry and Wastahi Campground all these are in the mountains you can see great woods - ocean, and be removed from the city and still get to Shoreline in 20-30 mins or to the city in 60-70 mins if there is no traffic http://www.reserveamerica.com/camping/big-basin-redwoods-sp/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=CA&parkId=120009

In RMNP, pick from Glacier Gorge, Arch Rock and Longs Peak. There's a good listing here for more info on RMNP and other good sites; http://www.greatoutdoors.com/published/colorados-top-50-campsites

Where are you coming from? Rocky Mountain National Park is a beautiful place but regardless of where you choose to stay, please be mindful of the altitude and allow your body time to acclimate because altitude sickness is very, very unpleasant. RMNP did suffer some damage from the flooding we had last year so be certain to check their website or call them before you go - not all campgrounds and trails are open! Also, there have been some recent tragedies with lightning strikes so please be cautious with your travels and pay close attention to the weather. Other than that, I would recommend Colorado State Forest, Roosevelt National Forest, Pike National Forest, Maroon Bells, Angel of Shavano campground (near Salida), Oh Be Joyful Recreation area (Crested Butte), San Isabel Forest (you could take a ride on the Highway of Legends), Indian Peaks Wilderness Area, etc. There are oh so many amazing places here! It just depends on how far you'd like to travel and what it is exactly that you'd like to see.

Does anyone have suggestions on preferably free camp spots up to 1.5 hrs from denver that have good mountain biking nearby? Thanks!
Sarah L. replied:
Buffalo Creeks camp spots are big and beautiful. If you turn onto Redskin Road and go past the Little Scraggy parking lot and trailhead you will find the numbered campsites all along the road. Unfortunately they fill up quick so if you can get someone there on Thursday night, you'll most likely get a spot for the weekend.

+1 Buff Creek! Also check out mtbproject.com for good info.
