Has anybody ever heard of artemisinin its a chinese herb? Vet suggested it today
Kim S. replied:
Hi Amanda, I am not a vet but used a holistic vet in the past and they suggested Wei Q1 Booster herbal supplement by Jing Tang. I looked up the herb that you are mentioning is given for some skin diseases, cancers and malaria. Does your dog have skin problems from the IMHA? I do not know if the herbs would have worked for my little Pom Summer as she passed the day they arrived in the mail.
Kim S. replied:
Callie Kennedy- has a lot of knowledge on this and usage of Milk Thistle. She may be able to give some insight. I do know that I have a rescue dog now with some health issues, (IMHA is not one of them) and she is doing well using some Chinese herbal supplements.

You'll find that just an herb name in TCVM won't be familiar to anyone beyond a vet trained in TCVM because the vast majority of them are in blends with weird names like "Soothe the Liver", etc. I had Billy on herbs from my TCVM vet the whole time he was being treated. What form is it in? The Slippery Elm Cocktail is my vet's own recipe (she's on the faculty at the Chi Instiute). If the vet suspects an ulcer the Slippery Elm Cocktail will help enormously (if your vet is a TCVM vet thru the Chi Institute tell them it's Dr. Connie DiNatale's recipe.) Billy had all sorts of skin issues. Given the long term pred use and the skin problems I would tell you to have your vet talk to Dr. Jean Dodds (she has a TCVM vet in her practice at Hemopet in Garden Grove -- she won't have a problem with the herbs) -- but my bet is that your dog's thyroid is totally whacked. DON'T let your vet just send a thyroid panel to a local lab -- it's not going to read right. But if the thyroid is off, not a thing you do to correct the skin is going to work. Billy was on a plethora of herbs and meds -- at one time given all the teapills he was on (that's a favorite way of dispensing the herbs - little b-b sized pills - usually one per ten pounds of dog) and the other stuff he was taking about 50 pills twice a day. *smile* -- but the herbals helped keep his stomach, liver and kidneys in decent shape. how long has he been on the doxy? and what is the clindamyacin for? (that one is NASTY on the stomach in a big way) Has he been on the Flagyl long? (some vets use that to control diarrhea and there are better ways to do that -- the slippery elm cocktail being a biggie)
Callie K. replied:
The Slippery Elm Cocktail ***will*** help the ulcers. If you want to email me, I'll give you Dr. D's number and I know she'd talk to your vet. She *is* on staff with Dr. Xie ... and she's an amazing teacher. She knows I pass that recipe around for allll and she told me I could. But I suspect the thyroid may be taking a beating and Dr. Dodds would be the right consult (email or phone -- she is amazing what she'll do). If you go to the front page of the Hemopet website -- http://www.hemopet.com/ -- on the left hand side is a button to schedule a consult. There are times when you have to go around and work with other things -- and she knows blood diseases like no one else. It was my Dr. D who got me working with Dr. Dodds. My email is callieatcritturs@yahoo.com -- feel free to email me. I wasn't sure we'd get Billy thru all the darned drugs.
Does anyone know if any traveling vets come to Sedona for rabies vaccinations? I know of the one at Olsen's in Cottonwood, wondering if I can find it here in Sedona....

Mischca L. replied:
please look up Dr. Jean Dodds ahttp://www.hemopet.org/ She is a long time colleague, through your Vet an antibody titer test can be rum showing the immunity your dog most likely has from the previous rabies vaccine. Once you have proven immunity you can use that to show your dog doesn't need additional vaccines, This medically sound method has been used effectively in court.. around the country..The science behind implied immunity is the anti-body results you will get from her test Good Luck I am in process of authoring an article to be published.
Jyoti R. replied:
AZ doesn't accept the exemption proved by titer. We tried this, having lost two dogs to auto immune illnesses brought on by rabies vaccinations. Onset of symptoms were the same time in both dogs after receiving a rabies vaccination. Dr Todd Metcalf in Prescott upholds this connection and has done a lot of research into it too. You could try over turning the legislation through court though.
I just paid $100 to rescue a maltese born 10-10-2013 who had been kept in a cage with her mother and a half brother from another litter. The breeder stated that she...
Dr. N. replied:
Dear Cathryn: Hi ! Thank you for rescuing this little one. If she’s had no vaccines at all, she really needs 2 doses of distemper + parvo virus vaccine (e.g. Nobivac DPV Puppy) given 3-4 weeks apart, and then at least three weeks later, her first rabies vaccine ---as mandated by law. This should be with the only thimerosol (mercury) –free rabies vaccine = Merial IMRAB TF-1. To find a holistic veterinarian in your area to help here, please look at www.ahvma.org under “Find A Holistic Veterinarian”. Then once loaded, scroll down the right hand side for members in TX. Best wishes, Dr. Dodds
