Always go for the sale shoes. Discounted shoes from a past season. A chukka boot can be dressed up or down. Jackthreads.com often has Hush Puppies on sale- old school and standard, they look classy without looking like you're trying too hard. Steve Madden and Cole Haan are my other staples. Look on Ebay, or find outlet stores (shops at Orange have a number of places with deals)

ALWAYS get additional opinions. I went to Connect Hearing in HB & was told I needed 2 hearing aids (despite two prior tests that indicated one bad ear) @ around $5.5k for both. My insurance (Aetna PPO) would cover $1k & they would "discount" it another $1k. I worked in the car biz for a long time & I had a sense about their sales tactics. They only offered 1 brand, Phonak (poor reviews) on a trial basis, pressed for 2 aids, & every time I pushed back on price, the response was "I'll have to check w/my regional manager" & kept offering different payment structures rather than other product options. Straight up used car sales tactics. I got a 2nd opinion from Newport Mesa Audiology. Dr Pilgrim there was awesome. 1st thing she did was clarify that the other place had recommended 2 hearing aids & asked why. She seriously thought it was a typo since my charts showed I only needed one. Her honesty & candor about what I actually needed is what won me over. They also carried a brand that had excellent reviews (Oticon) & she showed no signs of trying to up sell or sell a particular brand over another, just honest advice.

Jenni, I encourage you to get another opinion. I was told that, oftentimes hearing aids are not very helpful for moderate/moderate severe hearing loss due to permanent nerve damage. I went to the House Clinic, in LA, for years and years. I now see Dr. Joni Doherty at Shoet Ear Associates ... offices in Newport Beach and Seal Beach. Dr. Doherty actually completed her neurotolgy fellowship training at the House Clinic. http://www.eardoctor.org/index.cfm

You can try The Little Cobbler inside the WM mall. I've gone to him for decades for anything related to shoe repair, soles redone, etc. He's honest, nice and tells you the cost up front. I've never been unhappy with his work. I've tried Anthony's at Seacliff, but didn't have as good of craftsmanship done there and their weekday hours rarely fit my schedule.

The Skora Forms are good for all around use. I haven't tried them for beach running. I had the 5-Finger KSO because I wanted a hybrid shoe that can get wet and I can use on the pavement but I took them back because sand kept getting in the shoe.
