Kathy Laughlin Cyphers, yes, we do have a list - university of Az is our only approved sarcoma center in Arizona. But the list is not pediatric specific designations unfortunately, and it's critical that she be seen by a pediatric specialist. Also, Carrie Wilbur, please be sure to pass along that we have a grant program to cover out of pocket costs of getting a second option consultation, so if they decide to make a trip for an initial appointment elsewhere, this will help with hotel, airfare, copy, etc: http://sarcomaalliance.org/financial-assistance/
Katie T. replied:
Primary Children's Hospital in Utah is amazing! The doctors from the Sarcoma center at Huntsman Cancer Institute also practice there. Good luck!
Trula S. replied:
Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City is a great place. They are affiliated with the Huntsman Cancer Center. Dr Randall is a world renowned sarcoma specialist.
Vanessa R. replied:
UCLA Mattel's Children Hospital! Dr Federman is awesome! He's my pediatric oncologist and he specializes in Sarcoma's and I have Ewing's I can relate to your daughter about feeling lonely because I was being treated by an adult oncologist and when I was doing my inpatient treatments I was of course on the adult oncology floor and I didn't feel like there were people my age going through a similar situation. So I made the switch to a peds oncologist and that floor is great! They have a section dedicated to teens and young adults with a lounge room and I feel much more comfortable now. I highly suggest UCLA because I have had no complaint!
Tracey B. replied:
Seattle Children's....in conjunction with Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, Fred Hutchinson Research and Univ. of WA....sarcoma specialists

I'd highly recommend primary children's in salt lake city as well. They share resources with Huntsman Cancer Institute which is a sarcoma center. Dr. Jennifer Wright is an excellent pediatric sarcoma oncologist there.
Pat M. replied:
Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia CHOP....world renown
Travis P. replied:
Primary Children's in Utah. Drs. From the Huntsman Cancer Sarcoma team service that hospital also. Randall and Wright are great doctors that I have got to know pretty well unfortunately. There is a Ronald McDonald house and also another brand new living space I forgot the name.
Dafydd T. replied:
Try Childrens Hospital LA (http://www.chla.org). And look up Ronald McDonald House for housing. Most Pediatric Hospitals, whether they are free standing or associated with an adult hospital are part of the COG (Childrens Oncology Group) and have pediatric oncologist who know about EWS.
Alison O. replied:
It's quite a distance, but Dr. Rick Womer at CHOP (children's hospital Philadelphia) is one of the top ewings experts and absolutely wonderful: http://www.chop.edu/doctors/womer-richard-b#.VpPRfuxOLv4

Overlake Hospital in Bellevue has a Breast Cancer Center. That is where I went with my breast cancer. They have all the doctors, etc. right there. They study each new breast cancer and give a combined treatment plan. I still go there for my mammograms and follow-ups. A Dr. Harrington was my surgeon.

Does anyone have a veterinary oncologist recommendation? Preferably in this area.
Molly C. replied:
Dr. Mona Rosenberg is wonderful. She is in Woodland Hills.
Johanna T. replied:
Veterinary Cancer Group in Woodland Hills (Mona Rosenberg as others have mentioned). Our oldest Ridgeback had lymphoma 4 years ago, and chemo. She is still in remission. Chemo was not hard on her. A couple of days of stomach upset, and her whiskers fell out but she was otherwise her normal self. She remains cancer free and is now 14 years old. This is unusually successful, but you can expect 1.5 to 2 years (average) of remission if you treat with chemo. The chemo only goes on for 4 months so the rest of that time is your normal dog. If it is lymphoma, that is one of the most treatable canine cancers. If you decide to treat, get on it as quickly as possible and do not start the dog on Pred before deciding - using it before chemo makes the cells resistant to treatment. PM me - I have loads of information and would love to help. I was terrified when our dog was diagnosed and would like nothing more than to ease that fear in others.
Nina R. replied:
Has anyone had any experience with Animal Specialty Group in Glendale? That is who Dr. Stern recommended. I have an appointment tomorrow. The biopsy came back as lymphosarcoma diffuse large cell high grade.:(
Johanna T. replied:
If you are about to set out on an expensive chemo protocol, a second opinion/quote would be worth it. I believe a consult is about $80. The other recommendation I have, though it is also in Woodland Hills, is Dr. Tan at Veterinary Specialists of the Valley (a VCA hospital).
Caroline M. replied:
City of Angels in Culver City is top notch and very caring and sensitive staff. They treated my dog's bladder cancer with radiation which gave her a few more months (not a difficult procedure for the dog). http://www.cityofangelsvets.com/veterinary-cancer-group.htm
Nina R. replied:
Not sure. Dr. Stern will have the biopsy results tomorrow but he suspects lymphoma. My 6 year old female dog has rapidly growing swollen lymph nodes- under her jaw, neck groin.
Chemo is not painful for dogs. Canine chemotherapy is given in very minimal doses, and is nothing like the human approach to chemo. It extended my Bullwinkle's life, and never made her ill. She actually looked forward to and loved her chemo appointments. Dr. Rosenberg was very caring and took wonderful care of Bully (and me) to ensure that she was never put in any unnecessary discomfort. Nina, I highly recommend this book. It was very enlightening to me, and Dr. Rosenberg was very familiar with it and open to alternative approaches to supplement her protocols. I'm wishing the best for you and baby! http://www.amazon.com/Natural-Guide-Preventing-Treating-Cancer/dp/1577315197

Does anyone have a recommendation for an Oncologist AND a Planned Parenthood Rep. I can speak with regarding HPV & men? I need a quote for an article
Alyssa R. replied:
My understanding is that there is a clear and widely proven link between HPV and a variety of cancers, including throat cancer - rectal, cervical, you name it. If you can have sex with it, you can get HPV and cancer in it. http://www.webmd.com/sex-relationships/features/4-things-you-didnt-know-about-oral-sex HPV is a nasty and tricky little bug.

Alyssa Royse FANTASTIC point ... I was thinking the same thing! I mean all you have to do is get the infected schmear near a thin mucus membrane and you're done. Not to mention the warts you get.
