Best education is with other backpackers. Check out some local orgs or even meetup.com so you can get not just advice but practical on-the-spot opportunities and feedback. Enjoy!

We go backpacking often and you will most definitely need to get lightweight gear and a good backpack to carry it all in. Check out my shop for more gear and this backpack. Message me if you have any questions, I'm here to help! https://www.facebook.com/campbum/shop/

See if your area holds courses - I live in San Diego and the SD Chapter of the Sierra Club holds a yearly a 10-week Wilderness Basics Course (WBC), complete with 4 overnight backpack trips and classroom learning about everything around backpacking, gear, outdoors, navigation, safety, etc, it's for all levels novice to experienced. I'd recommend. You will learn a lot and it's broken out to not be so overwhelming (which you might get from so many comments/opinions coming at you all at once). Hopefully where you live has something like this in your area and definitely sign up for it, You will also meet people at your level and above to start backpacking with after if you so choose.

I've backpacked for 30 years and I can tell you that you will not like carrying cheap heavy gear then buying it all again later higher quality. Buy light wt good quality gear now.... even if it's used which is even better! You only been need to focus on bag, shelter, pack and cook kit for now. The other items you can upgrade later. PM me if I can help in any way. You can relax too. Sometimes I only pack in 2-4 miles if I only have two days... even though my standard was always 40 mile loop trips over a week. I went with Sierra Club in the 80's first 3 seasons to learn skills from everyone. Happy Trails! It will change your life.
Julianne B. replied:
for your first time, go only about a mile away from your vehicle, so you can feel safe and get out if you are uncomfortable. you can try renting gear. or you could spring for a NOLS course--www.nols.edu expensive but you will learn more than you ever thought possible and it will be one of the most important things you do in life

I'm leading a trip this August in the north cascades for people looking to get into backpacking. There is no guide fee so the trip only costs $375. This includes transportation from Seattle, food, and gear. http://offgridexpeditions.com/trip-information/
