New to the area. Can you give me some recommendations for summer camps? My son will be going into 4th and my daughter will be going into 6th. Thanks in advance.

Jim, here is an example of the summer programs that Needham Park & Rec offers (this is *LAST* year's summer brochure, just as an example). Please check in w/ them as to when the 2016 brochure will be ready. Good luck & Welcome to Needham :) http://www.needhamma.gov/DocumentCenter/View/11207

Camp Sewataro in Sudbury. Bus picks up the kids. Also Tenacre Camp in Wellesley and I believe Dana Hall has a good one.

Dexter Southfield Summer Camp in Brookline. They have many different camps on one campus including a day, enrichment, science-tech and various sports camps...soccer, tennis, lax. There's a pool and 2 ice rinks right on campus...bus transportation as well.

If you are interested in overnight camps, I can help. I am a Needham mom with 3 school-aged kids of my own. There are tons of great sleep away camp options around! Monica@campexperts.comhttps://www.facebook.com/thecampexperts/

Check out Camp Everwood in Sharon. Bus picks up and drops off in Needham and is included in camp tuition. It's great. On a lake and has a very old school summer camp feel. The directors are incredible.

Jim...try to attend the Parent Talk Camp Fair. You will be amazed at the options. As Director of Park and Recreation, I invite you to try our quality programs...most of the staff (including me) grew up attending, and then volunteered. Community Education also offers some short day programs in July.

Kristina, you can also check out Needham Park & Rec....they have wonderful programs. A lot of people will use them to supplement private camps, either before or after your camp week(s) are done. They're great: http://www.needhamma.gov/index.aspx?NID=1203 (Patty Carey, when do they publish the summer brochure?)
Any recommendations for a short term overnight summer camp that's not sports focused for an 11 year old boy? TIA.

https://www.facebook.com/670640789716838The Summer Spot in Needham is a great camp. It was started by people who work for the Needham Extended Day programs at the elementary schools. I think some Newman children go there. They have extended day. Not positive if there are openings!

Camp Kaleidoscope at the JCC. This year marks my tenth year going there, so that should show you something about how awesome of a camp it is. It's an arts and science camp comprised of two, four week long sessions, and it also has an extended day option. The catch is that it is located in Newton, so there wouldn't be too many Newman kids there. But do not let that deter you from looking into signing up.

As a previous poster said, YMCA Hale (through Needham Y) and Dedham Community House are both great programs, reasonably priced compared to others, and have hours much more suitable for working families.

Also: Hale Day Camp in Westwood. Bus picks up before 8 am in Needham. Dropoff 4/430 in Needham or do extended day at the camp until 5 or 6. A no frills, active camp
Tess M. replied:
Charles River YMCA has a Hale Summer camp-very affordable. Also there are some great options through Needham Parks and Rec but they don't all go as late as 6-maybe you could subsidize with a parent who has another child there and wants some $$ on the side

For Kids sleepaway tennis: Tamarack Tennis Camp in Franconia NH is excellent -- I can't say enough great things about it!!! I went at age 13 and went every summer until I became a counselor there. There is also Windridge Tennis Camp in VT. Very similar to Tamarack.

Just want to give another POV on that outdoor camp thru the town. My 10 year old did Outdoor Adventure camp this past summer and couldn't wait for it to end. Fishing (at Rosemary Pond) is just one day, and is just for an hour. Because it was raining, his group didn't go and it was not rescheduled. He didn't learn anything about surviving in the outdoors (as it was advertised). If your kid really likes to fish, get a license and go to the town reservoir. There are always families there fishing. Bass Pro Shops also offers weekend fishing "classes" for kids who are interested in the sport.

I loved Camp Malcolm!!!!
Kimberly S. replied:
Camp Malcolm was a Girl Scout camp when I attended in the 70 s.
Patty C. replied:
The McCracken family owned the property and gave Needham Girl Scouts use of the property. In the mid 1980 s the McCrackens deeded the property to Town of Needham. The Patriots Trail Girl Scouts ran Camp Malcolm there for decades, but in the 1990 s reduced their summer camp sites to a few large sites. Needham Girl Scouts continued to use camp property for many years, but haven't in recent years. The camp house was set on fire and lost, but the large shelter and two unused latrines still remain. The future uses of camp property will be a side project related to Rosemary Pool, including trail improvements.
Patty C. replied:
The Trails Master Plan is on Town website under Park and Recreation or Conservation Department. An updated plan isn't done for Rosemary, yet. We are finishing Eastman at Newman, and Some projects at Ridge Hill. We are designing Reservoir, so Rosemary would be next.
Becky K. replied:
Camp Malcolm is not still used. I remember when swimming was at the sewalls old house in Mrs sewalls back yard pool. Before we could go to rosemary. It's fun to hike back in there
