Veterinarian recommendations? I'm looking for a vet for my new large breed puppy.
We took him for his first check up to Banfield at Petsmart in Natomas and I...

I had the same issue with Carmichael animal hospital. The vet there would always lay a huge guilt trip on me if I didn't say yes to everything he offered. After a bit of searching around I found All About Pets at San Juan and Greenback in Citrus Heights. The staff there has been great, and while they will offer things like heartguard, dental plans, etc, they have never come across as pushy and have always put my dogs' health first.

Our great dane has been well treated at [Campus Commons](http://www.campuscommonspethospital.com/) for traditional care -- shots, an evulsed wrist bone, general checkups -- as well as the [Integrative Veterinary Center](http://integrativeveterinarycenter.com/) for acupuncture and chiropractic care. The chiropractor at the IVC, Dr. Troy Stevens, does most of his work on horses in Dixon, so adjusting (and playing with) our 130 lb dane is no problem for him. Out of curiosity, what breed do you have, and whereabouts do you live?

Sunset Pet Hospital has been absolutely amazing. I've been going there for over 15 years and they've never tried to upsell or anything, their main concern is what's going to help the pet.

Abel Pet clinic is good. As is Mueller Pet Medical Center. I will say for vaccinations I HIGHLY suggest checking out [VIP Pet Clinics](http://happypet.com/) . they offer low cost vaccinations, way less than you would pay at any vet and they operate all over every weekend. We only pay 5 bucks for Rabies vaccine at their special clinic at Front Street Sac City Shelter. They also do low cost parasite testing. I find groupon deals for them sometimes

For anyone out east, Blue Ravine Animal hospital in Folsom is excellent. They're also the local pound for registered escapees (dogs with licence tags).

Sunrise Animal hospital - near Sunrise and Old Auburn. I've been taking my pups there for over 10 years. No complaints !

Northgate pet hospital. This place is old, beat up and in the ghetto(No offesnse if you live there) but the owner and vet there is incredible. He is very direct and only cares about you if you truly care about your pet. He doesn't ever try to scam and will explain every charge. He is the best vet I ever met. At first his dry direct attitude was hard to handle, but I realized that he really cares about animals and loves what he does. He used to do volunteer work for homeless people and their animals and major surgeries. He has since moved on and went towards making his business. Great man, Great vet.

Do NOT go to Midtown Animal Hospital. They almost killed my cat. And the vet called my cat "stupid" when she (the vet) was outside the room and thought I couldn't hear her. I love the folks at Sacramento Animal Hospital on 57 th and H, not sure how they are with dogs, but they treat my fur babies wonderfully.

OMG, don't go to Banfield! They are the absolute devil. We go to Dr. Saraydarian (though I can't pronounce his name so I call him Dr. Serendipity) in Elk Grove. Very experienced and good prices. http://www.countryveterinaryhospital.com/ Another option is VCA Bradshaw but do not let them just assign you to a vet. Request Dr. Catching or else don't go there.
Vet recommendations? Live in the richneck/Jefferson area. I have a puppy who needs to be fixed and get his shots. I also have an old male who I'd like just to have a...

I used a vet on Warwick Blvd, they just relocated near Bowditch Ford on Warwick. First time visits included a free check up, but you pay for shots and all that stuff. Newport News Animal Hospital595-6624. Vet is really nice and staff friendly and professional. I called several after I moved here and they were reasonable cost.

If you're willing to drive to Gloucester I took my dog and cat to the spay and neuter clinic in the white marsh shopping center and loved them! Great staff and neither of my babies had any issues. As for a check up I drive from stoneybrook to Gloucester vet across from lowes and absolutely love them! Dr. Amy is my favorite. She's so nice and attentive and genuinely cares about your pet!

Any recommendations for pet insurance? I took my 2 dogs to the vet today for their annual checkups, vaccines, blood work, etc. and a supply of their heartworm and flea...
Carol N. replied:
I have been using Banfield at Pet Smart for 9 years now. I pay around $32.00 a month and that includes free visits anytime, 20% off all meds and heartworm...2 check ups a year with bloodwork, urine, feces, shots and teeth cleaning. I have saved ALOT of money. I drive 50 minutes to the vet, but, it is worth it in the end. There are a bunch in Maryland. You can also go anywhere in the US and use them and your records are available on the computer for you to review.
MaryEllen M. replied:
Flea& tick, and Heartworm Prevention is much cheaper on line. Never purchase those items from your vet$$$$$. Most areas also have Rabbies Clinics, which can save you even more mnoney. We just tookour 2 Labs for their annual checkup, and it was $500 for shots, physical and bloodwork.Money well spent, but mainenance meds are chaeaper on line!

Plans that cover routine care (whatever you can plan for) aren't cost effective. You want an illness and accident policy. Healthy Paws was top rated last time I checked this site: www.petinsurancereview.com

I ended up going to Toano! Thank you so much for the advice everyone! (I really liked it at Toano Animal Clinic - affordable and the vet is a sweetheart!)
Judith W. replied:
PETA does them for $15 per vaccination and they test for heartworms and give that medication as well (757-622-7382). Or you can go to the Penisula SPCA and they do them for. $14 each. Both do spay/neuters.

Dr. Banks in Mattaponi is very reasonable! Might be worth the drive
To all of my 757 people... Does anyone know of a veterinarian that does payment plans or is low cost? Need all the help I can get please! Any idea is helpful!
Valerie E. replied:
I work in the field and many vet hospitals are now accepting Care Credit which can be applied for online. I would suggest if you can't get approved through care credit, then go to a family practice. Mine does NOT advertise that we do payment plans but usually the doctors will work with you as long as you sign a contract and leave your credit card on file. Also many vet hospitals that are NOT Banfield or another corporation will hold a check for up to 2 weeks.

Sajo or Pembroke Veterinary Clinic. Both are owned by the same Dr.

I go to Banfield Vet in the PetSmart on military hey and they are great with my bulldog. Even can set up to make monthly payments. It's worth it for me having a bulldog with so many issues. Only extra cost would be medications and tests outside the ordinary check up tests.
