Dear fellow vegans, can anyone suggest a good, non-profit, no kill animal shelter in Philadelphia? Newly opened will work. Thank you in advance!

I don't know your level of knowledge or experience with these types of groups, so I am just going to spout off some warnings from 16 years of experience. I also have many connections in the rescue world. I can usually find out the behind-the-scenes scoop on these groups. Appropriate knowledge of volunteers/staff, whether or not they use humane training methods (many don't), if they keep animals caged indefinitely (many do), the quality of vet care they provide, cleanliness of facilities, if they S/N before the animal leaves their care, how honest they are with adopters, if they take animals back if things don't work out, if they place animals with dangerous aggression, how well they publicize adoptables, how they treat their volunteers, and the quality (or lack thereof) of their screening and placement. There are also many groups that dump animals back at open-admission (sometimes called "kill") shelters if they can't find a home. Or they put animals in boarding kennels and let them sit there for months or years, because they took on more than they could handle. I also know of at least one rescue here in Reading that discretely euthanizes cats they've had to long. There is also a shelter that says they don't euthanize for space, but has used excuses for euthanasia in the past, such as killing cats with very treatable URI, saying a 6-year-old pit bull is too old to place, and killing all intact tom cats that have developed big cheeks, saying they will definitely spray. I would suggest working with a rescue group that uses foster homes. My interactions and those of contacts with "no-kill" shelters has been less than stellar. And many that were believed to be reputable have been shut down for hoarding and other cruelty violations. One thing I have also seen is groups sending aggressive dogs to "trainers" who often use very harsh methods. All that "pack theory"/"alpha" rubbish, shock collars, etc. Are you looking for quality of placements, or quantity? There can't be both. Do you want a group that only takes the easy to place animals, or one that sticks with any animal to the end? What do you believe should happen to dangerously aggressive animals that have extremely severe or multiple bites on their records? Do you have a species or breed preference? Do you like working with seniors or special needs animals? Ask LOTS of questions, and not just of the person/people in charge. I'm not sure if you want to foster, donate, volunteer, or what. At the very least, I can tell you some groups to avoid. Just message me. My current interest has been keeping animals OUT of shelters to start, because we can't adopt our way out of this crisis. We could never find enough homes. That's why I am starting Animal Family Alliance, but we are located in Reading.

We have taken quilts, sheets and other covers to the SPCA on Erie Ave. Also donated light blankets and crate pads to Last Chance Ranch in Sellersville area. I have a bunch of dog toys to donate now, have to get down there. My Danny only likes certain toys(he puts them in his" toy sanctuary" when he gets them so I know he likes them! He did this on his own btw) I leave the others around for a bit just to make sure then donate them. His fav toy is his squaky hedgehog with the Santa hat don't dare share that one.:-)Cat toys also get rounded up every so often, they have so many. My friends are generous with bday and Christmas furkid gifts.
